Arsene Wenger responds when asked if Arsenal treated Unai Emery unfairly

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has delivered his verdict on the Gunners’ treatment of Unai Emery when he was at the helm in North London.

The legendary Frenchman is our greatest ever manager. He is the reason why Arsenal are such a big club today and succeeding him was always going to be an incredibly difficult task.

Unai Emery was given that job and despite a decent first season, it just didn’t work out. He was sacked just 18 months after his appointment, and he has gone on to achieve great things since.

Arsene Wenger: Arsenal treated Unai Emery unfairly

When he’s not busy working for FIFA as the Chief of Global Football Development, Wenger does some punditry work for beIN Sports, usually during Champions League night.

During their coverage of Villarreal’s semi-final second-leg clash against Liverpool last night, the Frenchman was asked if Emery was treated unfairly by Arsenal, who sacked him just over three months into his second season at the helm.

Wenger responded by saying: “Certainly yes because they didn’t give him a lot of time.

“I think Unai Emery is a great coach and he has shown it in Spain again. He’s consistently there at the top level.”

TBR View:

Unai Emery is a phenomenal football manager, there’s absolutely no debate about that. The Spaniard has won 11 trophies over the years, including four Europa League titles, the most impressive of which came last season with Villarreal.

This term, Emery led the Yellow Submarine into the semi-final of the Champions League, beating the likes of Juventus and Bayern Munich along the way. His side even gave Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool a huge scare last night, showing everyone how good a manager he is.

However, Emery and Arsenal were never the right fit. Even in his first campaign when we got really close to achieving our objectives, our performances were rarely ever convincing.

Wenger has a point when he says Emery wasn’t given enough time as 18 months is not simply enough for a huge rebuild. However, when it’s not right, it’s just not right, and the Gunners did the right thing by parting ways.
