Tony Adams names two PL stars he'd have signed if he was Arsenal sporting director

Arsenal legend Tony Adams has had another rant over Arsenal’s recruitment over the last few years.

The legendary Gunners defender has been heavily critical of some of the business we’ve done recently.

We all know he was against the signings of Nicolas Pepe and Martin Odegaard, while his problems with Hector Bellerin and Arsenal’s central defenders over the last few years have been overly evident.

Adams, who has been a Sporting Director at seven clubs, believes that Edu hasn’t been smart with his decisions. He feels that he isn’t giving the youngsters a chance and has claimed that he would have brought in Aston Villa’s Matty Cash and Liverpool’s Joe Gomez if he was at the helm.

He told Stadium Astro: “For me, as a sports director and I’ve been sports director at seven clubs, you kind of spot your weaknesses. Where are your kids coming through? Okay, we’re going to have to leave room there because we have some real talent. You have to give the kids an opportunity if you think they are going to come through.

“Where we’ve done wrong, is we haven’t pinpointed areas of recruitment. I love Cash, for instance, at Villa. He’s a Londoner. Gomez is another Londoner! He’s a wonderful football, one of the best central defenders in the country. Those kinds of kids.”

Arsenal Insider’s view:

Gomez has become one of the top defenders in the country since joining Liverpool back in 2015, while Cash has had a brilliant season at Villa after his summer move from Nottingham Forest.

It’s easy for people to now say that Arsenal should’ve gone for them when they were relatively unknown. However, if we did make a move for them, the criticism would then have followed about how we’re refusing to fork out big money to sign top players.

We live in a world where every decision is questioned irrespective of whether it’s a bad one or not. Arsenal, Edu and Mikel Arteta have been doing a fine job with respect to transfers over the last year and they should keep that up.
