Arsenal legend David Seaman spoke on Sky Sports about Kieran Tierney’s ‘true grit’ as a player that makes him worthy of being the club’s vice-captain.

The Scotsman is one of Arsenal’s best players. He has been brilliant for us this term, and his absence last night showed just how dependent his teammates are on his services.

There has been a lot of talk over the lack of leaders at Arsenal. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s quiet nature has raised plenty of questions, but Seaman feels that Gabon star will retain the armband for as long as he is at the club.

However, the former Arsenal goalkeeper believes Tierney deserves to be made vice-captain. Hector Bellerin is Auba’s deputy at the moment, but Seaman claims that the Scotsman would be great at that role.

Seaman: Tierney should be made vice-captain

He said: “He had a bad shoulder injury and got a few other injuries, but his crossing ability is brilliant. And, to be fair, that (goal against West Brom) is not a bad goal with his wrong foot, is it?”

“He’s certainly that sort of material (future skipper), but you don’t go upsetting your main striker by taking the captaincy off him, and obviously now that he’s (Auba) signed a new contract, I think that’s been put to bed, so I think Aubameyang will be captain.”

“Tierney as a vice-captain is great. I was vice-captain at Arsenal for a long time and I loved it. With Kieran Tierney, you get that true grit thought going through your head whenever he plays. He’s a guy that wears his heart on his sleeve, but he’s a really good player too.”

Bellerin has been here for about a decade and it would unfair to strip him off his position as vice-captain. Tierney’s recent comments about the Spaniard just how good a leader he is (read here), which eliminates the need for a change.

With or without the armband, Tierney is a leader. His attitude and work-ethic gives a lift to everyone around him, and it is no wonder many of our stars looked clueless without him last night.
