Premier League Roundup: Late drama at Anfield and Aubameyang shines on debut

Jurgen Klopp says he would be hit with “the largest fine” in football if he gave his true thoughts on the decisions that cost Liverpool victory against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield yesterday. Virgil Van Dijk, who was adjudged to have fouled Erik Lamela deep into injury time giving Harry Kane the chance to equalise from the spot, called Kane himself a “diver” for going over under the challenge of Liverpool keeper Loris Karius only a few minutes earlier. Kane missed the first penalty, following which Liverpool went up the pitch and scored a brilliant second, Mohamed Salah weaving past three Spurs defenders and making it 2-1 before Kane was brave enough to take the second penalty and atone for his earlier miss. Salah had opened the scoring for Liverpool, collecting a poor pass from Erik Dier and becoming the quickest Liverpool player to 20 league goals in history. Victor Wanyama came off the bench to thunder home an equaliser for Tottenham midway through the second half. Kane’s late penalty was his 100th Premier League goal.

Burnley shocked Manchester City at Turf Moor by grabbing a late equaliser, meaning Manchester United’s laboured 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town narrowed the gap at the top to 13 points.

Arsenal gave a debut to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and a first start to Henrikh Mkhitaryan but it was Aaron Ramsey who capitalised most from a very poor Everton display at the Emirates. Mkhitaryan created three goals, Aubameyang scored in front of his new fans but Ramsey got his first ever hat-trick in a 5-1 win.

Bournemouth have shot up to 9th in the table, coming from 1-0 down against Stoke City to win 2-1 and extend their unbeaten run to 7 games. Swansea City are also on a good run of form, a late equaliser at Leicester City grabbing them a point and moving them out of the relegation zone on goal difference.

Southampton got a much-needed win against bottom of the table West Bromwich Albion, beating Albion 3-2. WBA are now 4 points adrift at the bottom, but with it being so tight they are also only 4 points from safety.

Crystal Palace and Newcastle United drew 1-1 at Selhurst Park meaning Palace are now 3 points above the drop zone and Newcastle just one. Brighton are now level on points with Palace and the team they beat 3-1 at the weekend, West Ham United. 11th to 19th in the Premier League has a mere 3 point difference in what is one of the tightest relegation battles in Premier League history.

With Chelsea playing tonight, victory over Watford would see them move back into 3rd place ahead of Liverpool.
