Arsenal 2-2 Chelsea Player Ratings: A Very Topsy Tervy Night

Last night we were in for yet another Emirates blockbuster. Going from Jack Wilshere giving us the lead, coming back down to earth when losing 2-1 and then coming back to tie things up late on, the blood pressure monitors were through the roof.

Thankfully we saw an improvement from our New Years’ Eve Performance at West Brom, and here’s how the players got on:

Petr Cech – 7.0

Cech did well on a night where one-on-ones were unfortunately common. In all these situations, though, he came out on top but yet again failed to save a penalty.

Calum Chambers – 6.5

Chambers didn’t have the worst game as he did well when defending in and around our box but he was caught out a couple of times higher up the pitch and was lucky his mistakes weren’t capitalised on.

Shkodran Mustafi – 7.2

Another solid performance saw Mustafi put in a great shift last night. The German took control of our defence as he stepped out at the right time to intercept and was able to make some good tackles.

Rob Holding – 6.8

Our hero from the backend of last season has hardly had a look-in this term but he hardly put a foot wrong last night. He impressed for the most part but maybe should have moved a bit more quickly to prevent Marcos Alonso’s goal.

Hector Bellerin – 7.3

A mixed evening for Bellerin saw him make some good recovery tackles and actually try to use his pace for once but all that work seemed to be undone when he gave the referee a decision to make inside out own box. However, he topped the night off with a nice curling effort to rescue a point for us in the dying moments of the game.

Jack Wilshere – 7.0

A lot have people have been debating whether Wilshere should have been on the pitch but as he remained on, it doesn’t matter. He didn’t play his best game ever but with a great strike, he opened the scoring and was a presence in our midfield.

Granit Xhaka –5.6

It seems like I’m just repeating myself with Xhaka now. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a good player but right now he just isn’t showing me why he deserves to be picked every match. He’s quite stiff so moving about at the base of the midfield becomes an issue a lot of the time under pressure and he has often shown he has a silly, unforced mistake in him in a lot of matches this year.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles – 7.8

An almost perfect performance. Still playing out of position (which I’ve found easier to accept because of all the praise he’s getting), Maitland-Niles was probably our best player last night. He kept Chelsea quiet down our left flank for large parts of the night as well as showing confidence to get forward and put some crosses in. However, he was made to pay for the one mistake he made as he was too late to react to Zappacosta’s turn and cross for Marcos Alonso’s goal.

Mesut Ozil – 7.4

A very decent performance. I wouldn’t say Ozil balled out as much as he did in this fixture as last season but it was still a good display. There were times when his link up play to penetrate the Chelsea defence was unstoppable and an instance where he could’ve scored a goal similar to his one against Liverpool but he just didn’t take the chance.

Alexis Sanchez – 7.3

The first half saw Sanchez play the best he has in a while. He seemed in sync with his team mates and this was exemplified with a mad exchange in the box before he let off a shot which was somehow saved by Courtois and bounced off both posts.

Alexandre Lacazette – 6.7

Not quite the best run of games for Lacazette. Yet again, Lacazette failed to score. However, we are still seeing him try. He almost saw a snapshot flash past Courtois if it weren’t for the Belgian’s reflexes. He did have a chance which he should’ve buried with his right foot but he took too long and saw an effort with his left bounce off the keeper.

Danny Welbeck – N/A

Theo Walcott – N/A
