Arsenal 1-0 West Ham United: Man of the Match

The past couple of weeks haven’t been too great for Arsenal, but despite not Playing our best football we’re starting to get results again.

Playing our third consecutive game with a back four, the system looked a bit slicker than on the weekend but there were still a few issues going Forward.

The biggest issue being the full backs hardly ever overlapping to get crosses in and the wingers not running in behind to create problems for the West Ham defence.

But anyway, lets get into the man of the match candidates.

First up is Mathieu Debuchy. Making his return to the first team this year, Debuchy has been putting in consistently solid performances which have been capped by goals and assists in his last couple of games.

Last night, playing at right back, he handled himself well defensively making some good tackles and winning some important headers.

Going forward he didn’t break up the pitch too much but one time he did it resulted in a goal for Danny Welbeck as he headed Francis Coquelin’s diagonal across the box for Danny Welbeck to help home.

Next up is Francis Coquelin. At the base of midfield with Mohamed Elneny, Coquelin was the one to take more risks going forward which eventually got us the win.

Not all of his efforts connected but he was the main person to try and take us forward. A lot of the time his technique and passing is slept on but his ball to Debuchy in the lead up to the goal showed that he can do his thing when needed.

However, despite the positivity shown by Coquelin, my man of the match was Joe Willock.

Playing at number 10, Willock continued to impress when brought into the first team squad. Going forward he was very comfortable on the ball as he was able to tip-toe past challenges as well as finding some good forward passes.

He was also very assured when out of possession too. Whether it was in central spaces or when he came out wide, he made some good interceptions and tackles to win the ball back and start attacks for us.

It’s important to remember that Willock is still young though so there is still time for him to improve. And despite his impressive performance, his youth was shown a couple of times when he was shoved off the ball by the Pedro Obiang but nevertheless, a great performance.
