Light Weight
With structural engineering design and revolutionary technology, the iPE MFR-01 is the world’s lightest forged magnesium wheel made SPECIFICALLY for the Porsche 911 991 GT3RS, GT3, GT2RS, 992 GT3 with -35% weight reduction over Porsche aluminum Factory Wheels AND are also lighter than OEM Weissach magnesium wheels.

Crafted From Forged Magnesium
Magnesium is the lightest structural metal available by far and it shows lower density, higher specific strength, and exceptional machinability.
Most magnesium wheels are manufactured by one of two primary production methods: casting or forging. The main advantage of cast wheels is the relatively low cost of production, where, these wheels are made as molten aluminum is poured – or drawn in with a vacuum – into a mold which forms the material into the desired wheel shape. This makes them really affordable. However, the process of allowing the molten aluminum to solidify can lead to porosity. Porosity means that there are inconsistencies in the material structure which can lead to cracking and the overall reduction of the wheel’s structural integrity.
Unlike forged, where the wheel will start out as a solid piece of billet aluminum and a press will create the wheel using high pressures and hammer out the wheel to its shape. It leads to a higher cost of production but the pros far outweigh the cons when it comes to choosing forged over cast.
Flow Formed Manufacturing
Finally, we get to the wheel that presents us with the best of both worlds. The reality is there is nothing forged about these wheels. The process to flow form a wheel is just like any other cast wheel. However, the die for the barrel portion of the wheel is narrower than the final wheel will actually be.
Once the cast is made the unfinished wheel is placed on a machine where the wheel is heated and then spun. A spinning disc contacts the wheel and widens the barrel of the wheel forming the final shape and width of the wheel. This process of heat and pressure helps strengthen the aluminum in the barrel portion of the wheel.
The process stretches and compresses the aluminum in this case which increases the tensile strength of the wheel. What that means is you can see strength increase in the flow form wheel. Because we are increasing tensile strength, we are also going to gain something called shock resistance. Which will allow that wheel to take more abuse on the street and on the track and still fold its shape.
As a result, the flow-formed wheels are able to save weight simply because it uses less material compared to the traditional cast wheels.
Meaning, magnesium wheels have a lower unsprung rotating mass, which makes for faster acceleration and shorter stopping distance. In addition, it leads to better handling, increased fuel economy, longer life for brakes and tires, and reduced carbon emissions.
As if that wasn’t good enough, magnesium wheels also offer high damping properties that give them the highest vibration-absorbance rate of any structural metal. This increases the longevity of some vehicle components and a more comfortable ride.
Oh wait, there’s more – magnesium wheels are the best in the game in high heat conductivity, allowing for faster heat dissipation – preventing overheating of the braking and wheel assembly systems. So you can have more fun for a longer period of time, at the track!
