Irvin is an outstanding pickup for the Oakland Raiders; simply put. There was a reason why he was drafted 15th overall by Seattle back in 2012. The player is so versatile.
He’d be a great add on to the linebacking core or even a great Pass Rusher on 3rd down. Irvin has outstanding strength for his size. He is not only a great finesse pass rusher, but also a great bull rusher too. The beauty of Irvin’s game is that his pass rushing talent translates well from defensive end to outside linebacker.
He will not be a liability in coverage either. He was a dominant force in zone coverage. His man coverage is solid. His athletic ability and speed make up for the lack of technique when he follows his man or drops back.
There are very little holes to Bruce Irvin’s game despite my last statements. Compared to other linebackers in the league, Irvin’s game does not have many blemishes. When offensive coordinators run the ball they’ll shy away from his side.
Quarterbacks think twice about throwing his way due to sheer effort. Having such a fast player off the edge virtually takes away the play action pass. Not saying every coordinator will take it out of the playbook, but it’s pretty much a guarantee that the play will be ineffective.
He eats up slow footed tackles to the edge. Oakland’s signing gives them a playmaking set of linebackers in Irvin and Khalil Mack. 14 sacks in 3 years does not sound impressive, but the schemes that opposing offenses choose when facing the Seattle doomsday defense demands the quarterback to throw the ball quickly. Stats do not tell all. Teams schemed away from Irvin.
