A seven-mile stretch that runs within Warren County, New Jersey gained its reputation as one of the most haunted roads in the world.
Shades of Death Road is a road less travelled especially after darkness swallowed the place. The infamous road is haunted more than its name resounds. Like many haunted places, the factual events mixed with lore and legends added mystery to the twisty thoroughfare which travelers refused to traverse during nighttime.
Originally called The Shades because of the huge trees forming a canopy allowing no light to enter over the length of the street. The road is dark even in the middle of the day. The place became notorious for robbers and bandits to execute their crimes. Most victims were murdered and being left in the area. Stories also held that the spot was a favorite for vile gangs to get into fight over women. The quarrels often resulted to deaths.
There were also three recorded murders happened in the area: a man was killed with a jack; a wife slaughtered her husband the buried his head and his torso along the street; and Bill Cummins, was shot near his home and buried under a pile of muck.
Overtime, death was added to the road’s name as locals called it Shades of Death road.
A girl is said to be haunting the Shades of Death road (youtube grab).
People who cannot avoid the sinister street reported the sighting of a girl walking along the road. Rumor said that the girl was a victim of kidnapping and her body was thrown in the vicinity. Aside from the girl, another spirit troubled the place. The spirit was that of a young miserable man who committed suicide by hanging himself in one of the trees.
Stories also circulated that devil worshippers live along the Shades of Death road. According to legend, the worshippers drove a black car and attack anyone who stops on the road.
People narrated that while they were driving along the street at night, their car suddenly came to a stop without apparent reasons. When they get out to check the car, they heard footsteps or heavy breathing. Some said something or someone even ran after them.
The Shades of Death road leads to Ghost Lake and Fairy Hole.
