Human, we can all get physically overwhelmed at times. Normally, getting more Rest and slowing down the pace in life is what the doctor has ordered for physical exhaustion.
But what about when you experience a Weary soul? This state is rooted in your emotions. It is characterized by depression, sustained stress, and feeling overwhelmed about life.
During this Coronavirus pandemic, I sometimes hear people complaining about how tired they are from being shut up in their home to stay safe from the virus. But that’s not everyone’s reality. Millions of Americans stay up at night and turn every stone through the day trying to put food on their table and to pay the cost of keeping a roof over their head.
Also, let me take a minute to recognize the selfless work of our amazing health care providers. During this pandemic, they have been putting their lives on the line daily to nurse us back to health. Oftentimes, they lacked the require personal protection equipment for their own safety, but they still did their jobs. I have seen a number of them on the news talking about how they fear getting infected themselves and infecting their children and spouse at home.
The question is, how does one with a weary soul find rest? This is not something that goes away with a good night sleep. Nor can it be resolved through a doctor’s prescription.
The Cure for the Weary Soul
God cares about everything that concerns you. It’s not His will for you to live with a weary soul. During His public ministry, Jesus issued an invitation to all who are weary so they could find rest.
- The invitation. “Come to ME, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest,” He says (Matthew 11:28, NASB). Are you weary and heavy-laden? This is Jesus’ invitation to you. He says, come to me and I will give you rest.
- The method. “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (verse 29).
First, let’s talk about a yoke in Jesus’ day. It was a wooden frame placed on the backs of oxen so they went in the same direction and pulled their load as one. But how do we take the yoke of Christ upon us? We do that by yoking ourselves with His teachings.
Jesus and His Word are one. To yoke ourselves with His Word is functionally the same as literally yoking ourselves with Him—provided we allow His Word to guide us in the direction we should go. The result is that we will be pulling with Him and not against Him.
He says when we do that, two things will happen. We will learn from Him and we will find rest for our weary soul.
What Jesus is saying here should no mystery to those of us who have already yoked ourselves with Him through His Word. We know the peace of living by faith in Him, casting all our cares upon Him, and being anxious about nothing. This kind of Christ-centered lifestyle delivers us from and safeguards us from a weary soul.
What about you? Are you weary? Are you heavy-laden? Jesus is extending an invitation to you: “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me… and you will find rest for your souls.”
