BJJ Lessons of the Week – Sunday 4th June 2023

I watched a video where Jon Jones said that he would party the week before every fight he had, so that he had an excuse for himself in case he lost. I didn’t think much of it when I watched the video, but I’ve recently come to realise how it applies to me too.

Last week I said I wasn’t too focused on winning the Competition, and I realised I wasn’t going all in because of this fear of failure.

Like Jon Jones, I wanted an out, so if lose the competition, I could say to myself, “it’s because I didn’t go all in, I wasn’t trying to win anyway”

Why do I do that?

I guess it’s to try and avoid the disappointment and pain that comes with losing. If you give yourself an out, theoretically, you won’t have to Fully feel that pain, but I think what you’re left with is something even worse.

You live with the feeling of living half-arsedly and not fully going for something. And that carries over to other areas of your life. Your career, your business, your relationships. For me, I often like not fully committing to things, and I think it’s to avoid disappointment.

You have to be willing to fully commit, and that means fully feeling the pain of disappointment if you don’t win, but knowing you gave your all.

I believe I can win this competition in July and I’m gonna fucking go for it.
