Sri Krishna Udipi Temple HISTORY
It is believed that the temple in the form of Matha was found by Shri Madhwacharya somewhere in the 13th century. He was a staunch Vaishnavite and also the founder of Dvaita literature. The story tells that there was once a staunch devotee of Lord Krishna named Kanakadasa, It worshipped the lord day and night performing all the rituals. Apart from its religious history and legends, the temple is famed for its two exclusive features. Firstly, no one gets a close, wholesome view of the idol of Lord Krishna since it’s a tradition in the temple to worship the Lord through an exquisitely carved, silver-plated inner window with nine holes depicting the ten incarnations of Vishnu. He used to sit in front of the Matha and perform his meditation daily. Once day, there was a huge earthquake which caused a crack in the Matha. Miraculously, the crack was only so thick, that Kanakadasa, was able to glance and worship the Lord Krishna. That crack today is known as Kanakanakhindi.

Udupi Saikrishna temple Founded in the 13th century by the Vaishnavite saint Shri Madhvacharya, the Udupi Sri Krishna temple had the fascinating idol of Lord Krishna adorned nicely and jeweled in a beautiful golden chariot. According to Indian mythology, Lord Krishna’s birth mother Devaki yearned to experience the mischievous and carefree childhood antics of Lord Krishna, which she had missed due to her imprisonment by her cousin brother Kansa. To respect her wishes, Krishna promptly turned into a child again and performed his famous trick of stealing butter.
On witnessing this episode, Krishna’s wife, Rukmini, fell in love with Balakrishna, his innocent childhood form. She requested the acclaimed celestial architect Vishwakarma to make an idol of Balakrishna from the Shaligram stone (sacred stones found on the Gandaki riverbed in Nepal, which is considered to be manifestations of Lord Vishnu) for her daily worship. At Dwarka, the idol got completely shrouded by layers of sandalwood paste slathered on it by thousands of pious devotees of Krishna. However, at the end of the era of Lord Krishna, Dwarka witnessed a massive flood that submerged the entire city and washed away the sandalwood paste-covered statue. These eight disciples established eight different Maths (or mutts) collectively called Sri Krishna Math or Madam. They are Pejawara, Puttige, Palimaru, Adamaru, Sodhe, Kanivooru, Shirur and Krishnapura maths. These eight maths and the respective Acharyas (Chief saint) take care of the temple administration, pooja protocol, etc.

There are other festivals like Deepavali, Hanuman Jayanti, Ramanavami, Krishnashtami, Saptotsava and Paryaya festival. The festivals like Ugadi, Ramanavami, Akshaya Tritiya, Vasantootsava, and Ganesh Chaturthi celebrated in a grand way. The priests perform ritual rites and offer prasad, later distributed among the devotees. There is no arrangement of the special darshan in the Udupi Sri Krishna temple. It is open to all and a single queue maintained by everyone.
The Paryaya tradition has completed 500 years as of 2021. The celebrations begin a week before Sankranti, with the streets of Udupi bustling with artists and performers from all over Karnataka at night, which continue till the eve of the Paryaya ceremony. Lunch is usually served at noon from 11.30 am to 2:30 pm while the evening timings are from 8.00 pm to 9.30 pm. The number of devotees rise to nearly 30,000 during important religious events like the Paraya festival.
