Importance of Papamochani Ekadashi

What is the Tale of the Papamochani Ekadashi?

Hindus commemorate Papamochani Ekadashi, a holy day, with tremendous enthusiasm and devotion by those who follow Lord Vishnu. The term “Papamochani” literally means “one who eliminates sins,” and the day is seen as a means of obtaining the blessings of Lord Vishnu and regenerating the soul. Lets discuss in this article about importance of Papamochani Ekadashi in detail.

The story of Papamochani Ekadashi is told to Narada Muni by Lord Brahma and is mentioned in the Skanda Purana. The narrative goes like this:

Mahijit was a monarch who once presided over a thriving kingdom. The king was a good man who protected the dharma and provided for his subjects. He knew gambling was wrong, but it was his weakness, and he frequently indulged in it. One day, the king lost everything he had, including his kingdom and money, while playing a game of dice. Due to his gambling addiction, the monarch became a beggar and had to travel from place to place to survive. The king once stumbled across a group of sages keeping the Papamochani Ekadashi fast while strolling through a forest. The sages counselled the monarch to follow the fast as well since it would enable him to atone for his misdeeds and seek Lord Vishnu’s blessings.

He took their recommendations to heart and fasted assiduously. He meditated on Lord Vishnu’s physical form and chanted his name all day. Lord Vishnu appeared before him and blessed him due to his earnest devotion, absolving him of all his sins and returning his wealth and power. The king turned to Lord Vishnu from that moment on, and he annually observed the Papamochani Ekadashi fast with profound reverence and devotion. He also gave generously to the needy and underprivileged since he felt it was his obligation to support society and assist those in need.

The importance of Papamochani Ekadashi story shows us the value of obtaining Lord Vishnu’s blessings and soul purification. It demonstrates that regardless of our level of success or wealth, we are all subject to karma and must turn to God to purify ourselves of sins and impurities.
