In today’s fast-changing world, businesses are evolving via new innovations, and established companies are chased by market disruption caused by smaller niche, startups. These disruptions aren’t necessarily fueled by better products but rather by better customer service strategies. Business applications are system of records that keep the business running. Businesses must innovate in their business process to compete, excel, and stay ahead of the competition in the marketplace. Modern business applications or enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems need to support this fast and dramatic shift without losing its capability to run like clockwork.
SAP S/4HANA supports innovation in business processes and offers significant flexibility for customers and partners to adapt standard business software to meet specific business needs. In addition, customers and partners can also extend SAP S/4HANA solution by integrating with external contents (from SAP cloud applications to third-party applications or social data). Extensions can also use SAP Cloud Platform services such as SAP Cloud Platform Portal, mobile documents, SAP Leonardo Internet of Things (IoT), and machine learning solutions. These extensions are completely decoupled from the core SAP S/4HANA solution and available for both SAP S/4HANA and SAP S/4HANA Cloud.
Two types of extensions in business processes can be implemented using SAP Cloud Platform: extending the reach and extending the scope of the application.
Extending the reach of the business application means enabling additional devices, computers, tablets, and mobile phones from different owners around the world beyond the corporate desktops and networks owned by IT. This will significantly increase the number of users—not only employees but business partners or customers and the consumers of customers accessing business applications. This will also extend the reach of the organization to any corner of the world, meaning corporate may be headquartered in a certain area (e.g., North America) but attract customers in Asian or African markets. To support a global business operation, business applications must be available 24/7 because it’s working hours in some corner of the world at any given point in time.
Extending the scope of the business application may include adding new functionalities or providing new UXs or new corporate branding for consumers. It may include adding new functionality to existing applications or new use cases involving the integration of multiple in-house or third-party applications. Finally, extending the scope may also include totally new business opportunities involving social media, sensor data, IoT, or a combination of these.
