The course has been taken by more than 10,000 Microsoft employees worldwide and is designed to help you learn to live in the present moment more often.
Why is this important?
High performance is sought by all companies, but can only happen when we’re in the present moment. The 8-week course takes you through the 16 principles of mindset training.

Michelle Markham, Partner Sales Lead at Microsoft, took the online course and shares her thoughts:
Why did you decide to take the course on a high performance mindset?
Michelle: It’s really simple – I want to be a high performer! Also, our MD Steven Worrall was very passionate about it and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about.
How would you describe the course in 2-4 sentence?
Michelle: Ever feel like you’re capable of so much more than you’re achieving but there are just so many things inside you and around you getting in the way of breaking through to your highest potential? This course helps you understand in a very practical way just how to overcome those obstacles and become your best self.
What was your understanding of training mindset before the course? How did that change after taking it?
Michelle: To be honest I thought it was going to be quite fluffy and all about the mindfulness breathing and so on – I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was very concrete and applicable.
What were your biggest takeaways from the course?
Michelle: I am a workaholic; a multi-tasker; I rush through life; I have a history of self-doubt and I worry far too much about how others view me. Oh, and I also have 4 children. As a result of all of this, while I am giving 200%, I am not performing at the highest level I could be and there were a number of huge lightbulb moments for me in the course that changed the way I think and act.
1. Writing my personal philosophy forced me to re-evaluate my behavior. I realized that I need to share my values via my personal philosophy so I can better hold myself accountable to them. As a result of this, I avoid small things that have a big negative impact – like gossip and I look for ways to instead do small things that have a huge positive impact – like being present in meetings instead of doing my email.
2. Epic Moments. Most of us, especially women, tend to judge ourselves by our last failure, and as part of the growth mindset philosophy we’ve been slowly changing that, but this course makes actually achieving self-confidence possible in a simple and concrete way. In the course, you simple build a list of epic moments you can draw on. But the revelation came when I realized that where I could really contribute to building a high performance team, was to be the one to point out when someone else had an epic moment they could bank!
3. Knowing what you can control. I use the circle of control every day – at work, with my husband and with my kids to evaluate a situation and decide how to proceed. It’s been immensely freeing to realize that I don’t have to get sucked into situations and the negative behavior of others – I can choose to respond in a positive way, in spite of any drama going on around me. When I am at work, or I get home, and someone is taking their bad day out on me, I no longer get sucked in and especially at home, I’m able to defuse situations that previously would have erupted. I’ve been using the vernacular of control every day in the office and people respond really positively to it – now we just need everyone to do the High Performance Mindset MOOC so all the awesome vernacular can become part of our everyday life.
4. Multi-tasking. I always boasted about my ability to multi-task. I was proud that I could juggle watching the kids play sport with a conference call whilst doing email (on the weekend!). The simple illustration used in the High Performance Mindset MOOC where they asked someone to say A1, B2, C3 etc. finally got through to me. I cannot perform at my best if I am doing more than one thing at a time.
This brings me to the reason why I am telling you all of this. The course was amazing – I loved it – I’ve told everyone I know to go register – I talk about it to anyone who’ll listen – but I want more. I want to get more than 5 hours sleep a night. I want to be held accountable by my peers to live my personal philosophy, to shut my PC during meetings, to be optimistic, calm and confident even when under pressure – I want to keep growing.
