Today's MIEE Spotlight shines brightly on MVP David Renton, Head of Computing at West College Scotland, Scotland's first Microsoft Showcase School. David is passionate about the impact using technology in Education has on young people, and spends a lot of his time supporting the local community empowering them to do the same.

David works with local Primary Schools in Renfrewshire to engage the young people in technology, and equip the teachers with the skills they need to teach Computer Science effectively in the classroom. For a few years now David has successfully ran KoduKup Scotland, a national games coding competition, which he ran after completing a 6 week training session for local teachers, most of whom got involved in the competition. He also started coding clubs at three local High Schools with his 2nd year HND Games Development Students, using the Micro:Bit and Touch Develop to engage the pupils in coding and games programming.

This year David has been encouraging Games Development for Mixed Reality using the Microsoft HoloLens and engaging both boys and girls to encourage them into a future career in Games Development. As part of this he has been involved in STEM initiatives to encourage more girls into STEM subjects and careers.

In his own College, David makes great use of Touch Develop to allow his students to create exciting and innovative games that can be played on any device. One game in particular that the young people love the most is creating the Flappy Bird Game! Nearly all students will be able to follow the tutorial and create their own game.
