On today's MIEE Spotlight, we take a look at the innovative work of Joe Westermark, Teacher at Microsoft Showcase School Bae Baglan in Port Talbot, Wales. Joe is passionate about providing authentic learning experiences that enable his young people to develop 21st Century Skills.
Joe ensures his excellent practice of using Office 365 tools in his Classroom is developed across the school, by creating a team of pupils called 'Digi Docs' (now called 'Microsoft Young Experts' in his new school), who act as a peer support group for the rest of the school. As well as this, Joe works in the community to share enthusiasm for technology with parents, showing them the benefits of using technology to support teaching and learning.
Joe also supports other colleagues in his school as 'Digital Champion' where he has had a massive impact on teaching and learning throughout the school. This has impacted their journey towards meeting the Welsh National Digital Competency Framework by training staff and engaging them in the Microsoft Educator Community. Joe says that 'if the teachers are at the forefront (using technology)...this will encourage pupils to become innovators'.
In the classroom Joe utilises a wide range of Office 365 tools such as Sway and OneNote Class Notebook to allow his pupils to collaborate together and to showcase their learning in an authentic way. It has allowed the pupils to mark and peer asses each others work within the collaboration space. This year Joe has had great success in embedding Skype in the Classroom in his lessons travelling more than 89,000 miles around the globe, without leaving the classroom! His pupils loved meeting guest speaker Stephen Reid, showing them how to use Minecraft in the classroom!
