MIEE Spotlight- Matthew Pitts

Today's MIEE Spotlight looks at the fantastic work of KS2 Teacher Matthew Pitts from Broadclyst Community Primary School. As one of our Showcase Schools, Broadclyst is dedicated to using technology to enhance the education of the students, with the Surface Pro 4 central to this mission.

Matthew is passionate about the use of OneNote Class Notebook alongside his Surface Pro 4 to enhance the learning experiences for his young people. Using these Microsoft tools in the classroom has allowed Matthew's students to collaborate effectively in project-based lessons in an organised fashion and enabled them to create online portfolios of the work, all in the one place. Using OneNote has also allowed the other staff in the School to work collaboratively together, sharing resources and content and aiding in team teaching. As well as this, Matthew has been able to engage parents more by using OneNote to keep them informed of their children's learning objectives and how the curriculum is delivered in Broadclyst. In partnership with his colleague Anthony Lees, Matthew successfully developed a system to cascade this great use of technology across the whole school. He has also shared this great practice at a variety of conferences and seminars, such as BETT.

Matthew is also involved in an incredible project called The Global Enterprise Challenge (GEC) created in his school. This is an annual business enterprise initiative run by Broadclyst Community Primary School (BCPS) in Devon, UK. Each year, hundreds of students aged between 9 and 15 participate, in teams across more than 20 different countries.

The GEC was developed by BCPS in 2014, when it won a ‘pitch’ competition run by Microsoft within its Showcase School community across the world. It incorporates a wide range of business skills while encompassing many different elements of the school curriculum, putting the childrens learning into a real-life context and using Microsoft Office 365 technology to allow worldwide collaboration and creativity.
