How to Fix high CPU or Disk Usage by TiWorker.exe on Windows 10

Sometimes you see the CPU usage in Windows 10 and 8 is very high. During that time, the computer gets slow down and it is difficult to work with it. if you check on process details it showing TiWorker uses very High CPU or Hard Disk.

TiWorker (Windows Modules Installer Worker) is a system component in Microsoft Windows which is responsible for installing new modules and updates. and the process is able to use your CPU and produce a load on your disk.

As mentioned, the Windows Modules Installer Worker with the TiWorker.exe is a systems process that looks for new Windows Updates. It prepares your computer for the installation and check frequently for new updates. Sometimes the process get messed up and this will cause in a high CPU usage and sometimes also in 100% of disk usage.



TiWorker.exe is the utility that completes the various tasks that are needed after an update to Windows. Generally this Windows Modules Installer will terminate all the resource that is necessary for update once the update is finished but sometimes due to any technical reasons these resources will keep on running on the background and your computer gets slow down.

Search for malware and viruses

If the problem persists there is a possibility of the virus and malware infection. Download Best Antivirus software with latest updates and perform a full system Scan your computer.  After complete scanning Restart windows. check The problem fixed. if you still facing high CPU or Disk Usage fallow next steps

Install All available Updates.

Make sure that you have installed all available Windows Updates on your computer. To do that:

Click the Windows Start  button and open Settings. Now Click Update & security.


 Click the Check for updates button and then install all updates found.

 Turn off Automatic updates for Windows 10

This Problem is related to Windows Modules Installer (TrustedInstaller) and Windows Update (wuauserv) so first stop and disable two services: Windows Modules Installer (TrustedInstaller) and Windows Update (wuauserv)

To Trun off Windows auto update On keyboard Press Windows + R and type services.msc. on services windows scroll down and Look for the “Windows module installer” and open the Settings.
Switch the start type to manual. Repeat this step for the Windows Update service.



For windows 8.1 and 7 you can fallow to stop auto update

Open the Control Panel and click on Windows Update.
On the left side you can see the option Change Settings. Switch it to “Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them”.
Reboot your computer.



With this steps you set the Windows update process to manual, which means the high CPU usage by the Windows Modules Installer in Windows 10,  Windows 8.1 and windows 7 should be fixed. At least it no longer stars in the background. You set the Windows Update to manual, so you have to start the update regularly by yourself.

Delete the SoftwareDistribution folder.

The Windows Update Store folder (commonly known as "SoftwareDistribution" folder), is the location where Windows stores the downloaded updates. If this folder is corrupted, then you will face problems during Windows Update. So, delete all downloaded updates and force Windows to re-create a new empty SoftwareDistribution folder. To do that:

 Navigate to “C:\Windows” folder.

  Delete * (or rename e.g. to “SoftwareDistributionOLD”) the SoftwareDistribution folder.


* Note: Upon restart, the next time the Windows Update checks for available updates, a new empty SoftwareDistribution folder will be created automatically by Windows to store updates.
Restart your computer.

 If the "TiWorker.exe" high CPU usage problem persists, continue to the next solution.

Decrease TiWorker process priority.

Right click on task bar and select Task Manager. Then click More Details.
Select the Details tab.Right click at TiWorker.exe process and Set priority to Low. *



Now see how your computer acts with this setting. If TiWorker's high usage issue is not eliminated continue to next solution.

Use Windows Update Troubleshooter

This is also a  better and easier solutions to fix high disk and high cpu usage caused by the Windows Update process.

To Do this first Download the Windows Update Troubleshooter and run the WindowsUpdateDiagnostric.diagcab.

Or you can use inbuilt Windows Update Troubleshooter form control panel- troubleshooting-view all and select windows update.



when windows update troubleshooting window opens click next to start the troubleshooting process .The tool will check the registry keys and more the resolve the problems. It will maybe take some time, so be patient and don’t close the window.



Once it’s finished the tool should say “Troubleshooting has completed”. Click the close button and restart your computer.

Checking the System Maintenance

The system maintenance will take you into number of steps which will remove unused files, shortcuts and performs task maintenance. You can not only fix tiworker.exe but also you can remove the other unwanted files.
This is an alternative solution for the above problem. to clear the TiWorker.exe "problem" (which isn't really a problem) is to run Automatic Maintenance  to do this open Control Panel > Action Centre > Automatic Maintenance > Start Maintenance .


This process can take some time so make sure that you have something else to do before you start the process.

Fix tiworker.exe using the command prompt 

This is also an alternate method to fix the tiworker.exe problem.Go to Command prompt using the following way and follow the steps.
on start menu type cmd. The command prompt will get opened. Once the command prompt is opened then right click on that window and click Run as Administrator.


once command prompt open Now type sfc /scannow and click Enter. This process will take some time to scan for errors if found any problem this will fix itself. wait untill 100% complete.

Once the process is completed then you will get any one of the following messages.


  1.  Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. If you get this message then it does mean that your problem is fixed.
  2.  Windows Resource Protection Found Corrupt Files. If you get this error then type the command Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and run it in the cmd. 

The the process will start. Once it is finished Restart windows and check the problem fixed or not.
