How to fix windows 10 settings app not working



The Setting app is welcome feature on windows 10 but some times users complaining that after installed the anniversary update or upgraded to Windows 10 when they click to open the settings app, it does not open or when clicking the Settings icon launches Store app instead of Settings app.



Settings app, the Windows Store or several Store Apps, won’t open or crash. When this issue happen, the user cannot launch Settings or an App from Windows Store. This Windows Apps or Settings, working problems, commonly occurred after a Windows Update or a corrupted file system. Fix Using MS troubleshooter utility.

Download MS troubleshooter utility
Download and run the following troubleshooter utility (‘CSSEmerg67758.diagcab)  as administrator.



Now click Next button to let the troubleshooter scan and fix the issue. When it detects the problem, click Next button fix the issue. Give some time to the troubleshooter to fix your problems.

Repair Corrupt system files ( system file checker tool )

System File Checker is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files. System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) to scan your system files and to repair missing or corrupted system files in Windows 10, 8.1 and 7. if this problem happens due to corrupt system files this tool will scan and fix the issue for you.

To Run the system file check tool first open command prompt To do this, click Start, type Command Prompt or cmd in the Search box, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.



At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

sfc /scannow


The sfc /scannow command will scan all protected system files, and replace corrupted files with a cached copy that is located in a compressed folder at %WinDir%\System32\dllcache.

wait untill the scanning process complete after 100 % complete Restart the system and check if  the corrupt system file are the reason for windows 10 settings app not working you dint face the same error after running the system file checker tool.

Re-register modern apps using PowerShell.

Re-registering the windows 10 morden apps  might also work if the both of the above mentioned methods don’t work. Follow the steps below.

Type powershell inside search box and right click on it to run it as an administrator. when the power shell window opens type following command as it is to re-register store apps and press Enter.

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}  


 wait untill the command to execute after complete the command restart your PC and hopefully, it would fix the issue.

Create a new User Account for your windows 10 

More often than not, modern apps like Settings work without any issues on a newly created user account. So, create a new local or Microsoft user account and then check if the Settings app is opening. If it’s working, you can migrate your data from the previous account to the new one before deleting the old user account.

 Fallow the steps to create a new user account 

first  Right click on Start menu  and select Command Prompt (Admin). when the command prompt opens type bellow command to create a new user account

net user UserName  Password /add


Note:  Replace the UserName with your preferred  username and password with your account login password.

e.g. if you want to create a new account with name “windows101tricks” then you have to give the command: net user windows101tricks P@$$word /add

Then type this command to add the new user account to the Local Administrators Group:

net localgroup administrators windows101tricks /add

Sign out of your current account and into the new user account. Try accessing the Settings app, and it should now be working.

 Enable Developer Mode and Install available updates

Microsoft has been releasing fixes to address various Windows 10 issues, including the Settings app. So, make sure that your Windows 10 installation is up-to-date before jumping to other fixes.

First enable the Developer mode to do this At Cortana‘s search box, type “update“. Open Check for updates result. here Select For Developers at the left pane. here select the Radio button Developer mode and then ask Yes at the popup window.


Then select Windows Update (at the left pane) and force Windows to find and install all available updates. After update, restart your computer.


Restore your system to previous working state

If nothing is working for you then its now the best time to utilize the system Restore option to rewind your system to previous working state. System Restore allows you to ‘rewind’ your Windows installation to an earlier working state, without affecting your documents. 

1. Right click on the Start button  and choose Run,
2. Type rstrui & click OK.


 Click Next at the first screen. Choose an earlier date (that your computer is working normally) and then click Next to start the restore  process.


After Restart check the Setting app may work properly.

Refresh or Reinstall Windows.

If nothing works from the things mentioned above, then you might very well be forced to Refresh or Reinstall Windows.  Refreshing Windows will keep your Personal data, but your base operating system will be reinstalled.

Reinstalling Windows will Remove Everything from your System Drive, which in most case is C Drive. So you better take a backup of anything present in your C drive. This Option Pretty much guarantees to Solve Critical_Process_Died Error.
