Lebara doesn’t have its own cellular hardware. Instead, it has teamed up with other networks around the world to deliver its affordable service. It’s what’s known as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), like Sky Mobile and Tesco Mobile, which means it leases cellular bandwidth from a host network reseller, like EE, O2, Three and Vodafone.

While we don’t know how exactly Lebara has structured the relationship with its host network, Vodafone, we do know that it focuses on offering cheap international calls. It presumably chose Vodafone for this due to its vast international reach. As of November 2020, Vodafone operated in 22 countries across Asia, Africa, Europe and Oceania.

What Network Does Lebara Use?

Lebara uses the Vodafone network to offer 3G, 4G and 5G in the United Kingdom. This means that if you’re unable to use Vodafone in your area, you won’t be able to use Lebara either. The same applies to 5G as well: If you can’t get Vodafone 5G where you live or work, you also won’t be able to get it with Lebara. There’s total parity between the zones these two networks work in, because Lebara Mobile customers connect to Vodafone masts. 

There’s a coverage checker on the Lebara website that’ll help you see what sort of service you’ll receive in your area. Just pop in your postcode and it’ll let you know where you’ll be running 3G, 4G or 5G. There’s also a map that illustrates how strong the signal should be indoors and outdoors, depending on the surrounding area and how close the nearest Vodafone mast is (the nearer the mast, the better the connection).
