Awesome Ways to Motivate Your Sales Staff

By using the right Motivation incentives, you can create a place for happy, motivated employees. It doesn’t even matter what industry you’re in, the principles are universal: a hardworking, professional and productive sales team is a huge asset. Keeping that sales team motivated should be first priority for many managers.

However, utilizing a multifaceted approach to employee motivation can keep your salespeople performing at the top of their game.

Be Transparent

The numbers say it all: employees want to know what's going on in their company and how they  are contributing to the whole.

A recent study from Robert Half Management Resources revealed that 53 percent of all professionals wish they had more knowledge into the effectiveness of their contributions on their companies' bottom lines.

In fact, almost 65 percent of the people surveyed who were between the ages 18 and 34 stated they wanted more knowledge on how their involvement directly helps their company make money.

It's clear that employees want more: 44 percent of employees say annual performance reviews are the most commonly practiced employee engagement activity by their employers, but only 16 percent of employees rank them as an effective means of keeping them engaged.

Personalize It

You can’t motivate someone unless you know what drives them, which is why it's super important that you understand what each salesperson want to accomplish in their personal and professional lives.

It's always best to ask individually what motivates them. One employee may want to go on the next business trip; one may simply want a cash bonus; and another may want to get home earlier each evening to her or his children.

Create Fun, Healthy Competition

Lack of motivation should never be what's holding back your sales team. Fun, healthy competition can really go a long way on employee production and satisfaction, but even the best sales reps occasionally struggle with maintaining commitment through the day-to-day sales grind.

In an article from Gartner, researcher Brian Burke says:

“Gamification can be used to motivate employees to achieve their goals, resulting in a win for both the employee and the manager.”

There are many different methods to do this. Below, check out some ideas that have worked for others.

Expert Tips and Tricks

Showcase Status

“Let people see one another’s daily and quarterly progress via gamified dashboards. When you’re having a rough day, it’s easy to blame leads for your struggles. But when you see a dashboard showing your colleagues’ successes, you’ll find fresh gusto to dial those extra dozen numbers and hit your next sale.” - Lisa Pearnee, SalesForce.

Offer Reward

“Offer a local maid service for a month as a prize. This frees up personal time and eases some stress! The single people on your team love this. The married people on your team love this more. The married people with kids love this the most! Give them a break; give their spouse a break. This is something your average salespeople don’t buy themselves.” - Sundance Brennan, author of The Art of SalesFu.

Make It Sports-Themed

“Is your office filled with baseball, basketball, or football fans? Encourage a sales boost by creating contests your staff have interest in. When it’s football season, play a sales version of fantasy football using KPIs to measure who in the office is winning. Bench “players” when they have days off or vacations. In the spring, go March Madness style, where your employees go head-to-head on performance. Surprise the winners with tickets to a big game in your area.” - Erin Ollila, Blitz.

Create Teams

“Another great way to motivate your sellers is by creating small teams. This will give your employees a circle of teammates that can support, mentor, and encourage each other. Knowing that people have got your back not only makes the blow of a rejection easier but also helps ease the burden of a load.” - Jade Daryanani, Pepper Virtual Assistant.
