Everything You Need to Know About Social Media Cheating

What is considered Cheating in the world of social media?  In the past, cheating meant infidelity. Which meant … some sort of sexual entanglement.  In the world of Social Media, it’s not so straightforward.  Cheating has taken on a whole new meaning.

Social Media Cheating on Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook

Unfortunately, Social Media Cheating happens as frequently as you might imagine.  It’s very easy to do, and it can destroy emotional exclusivity.  The flirting, the winks, the racy comments made towards others … it’s the little things that damage how close a couple feels to one another.  It’s not physical, although it can certainly end up there.

Social media cheating is further complicated by a new term: micro-cheating.  These are, essentially, seemingly innocuous baby steps that can lead to an affair.  The term is murky because what one person considers problematic, another may not.  But to keep it simple, activities become micro-cheating when they are secretive or when the other partner would be upset by it.

Let’s take a closer look at how to spot cheating in three of the most popular social media apps: Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook.

Snapchat Cheating

Snapchat allows users to exchange photos and videos that disappear without a trace after 24 hours.  You may suspect that your partner is using Snapchat to cheat if you find that they are overly possessive of their phone and shield it from your glance.

But there are less invasive ways to discover Snapchat cheating.  For example, you can quickly check through Settings to determine how much of the battery is being used by the app.  For Android, tap Battery, then Device, then Apps.  On the iPhone, tap Settings and Battery.

If your partner is spending an extraordinary amount of time on Snapchat, take a look at their contacts.  That’s where you’ll find emojis next to each of the names.  These emojis have very specific meanings.  The fire icon indicates that there has been a significant amount of back and forth — sexual tension, perhaps?

Instagram Cheating

Instagram is described as a photo and video sharing app.  Users post captions, interact with their followers and sometimes cheat.  As with Snapchat, there are an equal number of apps that allow you to identify Instagram cheaters.  But how about simply following your partner?  By checking their profile, you can see when they interacted with a post, who they follow and who’s following them.

If you suspect your partner of Instagram cheating, you’ll want to pay close attention to the sorting of the people they follow.  Those with whom they interact the most will appear at the top.  Instagram’s app makes it relatively easy to see when your partner is overly friendly.

Facebook Cheating

With Facebook, it’s easy enough to fake a profile.  So keeping an eye on your partner’s activities may not be sufficient.  Plus, Facebook Messenger can make it a bit more difficult to identify a cheater.  Your best indicators may be through your observation of Facebook cheating signs.  For example:

  • Your partner engages in messaging at inappropriate times or late at night.
  • Your partner does not share the content of chats or texting.
  • Your partner abruptly shuts down the app or puts away the phone when you enter the room.
  • You don’t know the people on your partner’s Facebook wall.
  • Your partner takes pictures that you never see.
  • Your partner prioritizes Facebook and engages more with their cell phone than with you.

Privacy Settings

But what if your partner’s accounts are locked down?  If they have tight security surrounding their social media accounts, you could be dealing with a full-blown affair.  However, before you start with accusations, you may want to gather more information.  That way, you’ll have the evidence you need to make an informed decision about what to do next.

How Spokeo Can Help You Get Answers

You don’t need to hire a private detective.  With a people search engine such as Spokeo, you can check out your partner online with an email look up.  Spokeo can provide you with usernames for other social media apps or online dating profiles associated with your partner’s email address that you may not know about.

Cheating is, undoubtedly, easier than ever.  But it’s also relatively easy to catch someone and protect yourself in the process.  Keep in mind, however: If you find yourself with a partner who spends more time with the phone than with you, it’s time to rethink the relationship.
