Updating your beauty regime for summer isn’t just about finding a moisturiser with added sun protection. What about body care? Or rethinking your usual make-up routine?
Take our quiz below, answering A, B or C to each question, then add up your score to find out how to overhaul your summer beauty regime.
Q1. What’s the first product you change in summer?
A) My moisturiser – the rich one I usually love feels too heavy
B) My body cream – my skin isn’t as dry, so body butters take a backseat
C) My lipstick – red works with my winter wardrobe, but now looks OTT
Q2. You’re going on holiday. What do you have to pack?
A) A face cream that protects my skin, but feels light and fresh too
B) A good body scrub because I want the smoothest, softest skin
C) Easy. My lip gloss, mascara and bronzer go everywhere with me
Q3. How’s your sun protection holding up?
A) I wear a moisturiser with SPF all year, but could do with an upgrade
B) I’m all sorted, but always struggle to find the right after-sun
C) I’m still searching for a tinted moisturiser that contains a good SPF
Q4. What beauty products do you buy time and time again?
A) I’m a sucker for the latest face creams and facial oils
B) Body lotions, even though my current favourite is going strong
C) Make-up. I’ve had my eye on a new eyeshadow for weeks
Q5. What’s on top of your beauty wishlist for summer?
A) Fresh, dewy, skin; it means happiness, sunshine and holidays
B) A fit, strong body with smooth skin says summer to me
C) A glowing, bronzed complexion so I look happy and healthy
Skin care is your priority when the sun shines, but you’re not entirely sure where to start. So first things first: invest in a good moisturiser with the right level of protection. A broad-spectrum sunscreen – one that protects against UVA and UVB rays with an SPF50 – is essential, and should be worn every day.
A facial scrub can get rid of dead skin cells that have built up over the cooler months, freshening your complexion. Try one with tiny particles and soothing natural ingredients, like manuka honey, to shift grime and soften skin. Use twice a week to get the best results.
If you’re craving an immediate glow, but also want skin care benefits, pick a self-tanner specially designed for the face which also contains beauty-boosting ingredients such as macadamia nut oil. You’ll get a subtle tan and a ridiculously dewy finish.
When it comes to summer, you want your body to look its best. Apart from following an exercise plan and balanced diet, a good scrub is the fastest way to feel light and fresh. Go for one with birch extract, known for its purifying and detoxifying effects on sluggish systems.
Forgo your usual body butters, as your skin won’t need as much moisture in the humidity, and switch to lighter lotions that hydrate and cool – anything with mint will give you a wonderful tingling sensation. Choose one with added antioxidants to nourish the skin too, particularly after being out in the sun.
You can also update your fragrance to something similarly stimulating. Pick classic holiday scents – a perfume that blends fruity notes with woody undertones will give you a wonderful airy feeling.
You love make-up and admit you’d be lost without your essentials, but it’s time to upgrade to lighter, brighter formulas and colours. Your foundation should be first in line; a heavy base can clog your pores in the heat so switch to a beauty balm (BB cream) for some subtle colour, an even skin tone and added moisture.
For lighter skin tones, bronzing powder is a must for faking a sun-kissed glow without exposing your skin to the harsh sun. For the most natural effect, go for something that’s shimmer-free (real tans don’t sparkle!) and a shade darker than your usual skin tone. Using a medium sized brush, dust it over the areas of your face usually hit by the sun – your forehead, cheeks and the bridge of your nose.
Finally, swap your usual gloss or lipstick for one with an SPF to protect the delicate skin on your lips. Not a lippy fan? Go for a lip balm that contains an SPF and added ingredients like tea tree oil or aloe vera to soothe and protect instead.
