These pressed flower picture photographs can be found down the right side of the blog - the following is how (and sometimes why) I made them. I have made hundreds over the years but have just published a selection of them here.
.
The flowers for all these pictures were either collected in the Yorkshire countryside, or grown by us in our garden in West Yorkshire, then pressed in the special presses that Tony made for me.
.
If you would like to know how to make pressed flower pictures, I have a full teaching programme available. Just email me on [email protected]
I´ve logged the pictures here in alphabetical order - hopefully this will make it easier for you to check out each one individually.

COTTAGE
The first picture I made. It measures 52" x 27" (132 x 69 cm) plus frame
I started the collage on 14th May 1978 and completed it on 10 July 1979. My apologies for quality of photos – since then I´ve gone digital!
The background was drawn and painted for me by my friend Sylvia Pittam whose rabbit supplied the straw for the roof. The frame and engraved nameplate were made by dear husband Tony
Flowers and petals used: rose, dahlia, pansy, daisy, London pride, hawthorn blossom, buttercup, bluebells, marigold, lobelia, busy lizzie and a few others whose name I never knew
Brickwork started life as pink rose petals – thanks to all my work colleagues at Marston Paxman in Brighouse who brought me bagsful of flowers!
The path is edged with individual flowers of hawthorn blossom and London pride
For the wishing well base I used dahlia petals overlapped with rose petals for the uprights and straw on the thatch.
The little boy took hours. For his shirt I cut up pansy petals into tiny squares, then laid them right side/wrong side up to achieve a checked look. His dungarees are overlapping marigold petals. His hat, boots and features were all made using leaves or paper.
The shrubbery on the left is a collection of leaves and flowers (names unknown) given to me by my friend Dolores, who remains fondly in my memory each time I look at the picture.,
The trees are a mixture of leaves and ferns, but I used real treebark for the trunk, brought to me by Heather, a workmate
For the little girl´s dress I was stuck for something big enough, until a lovely lady at White´s florist in Brighouse came to the rescue with a large lily petal, which I trimmed with pansy petals to simulate fur.
Her bonnet and boots are assorted leaves
The garden contains various flowers, as listed earlier.
I had great fun making the window frames using balsa wood. I stuck narrow lace on the inside for curtains and “lit up” the downstairs window using pink card. I added the vase of flowers for a homely touch.
The thatch was simply straw, cut to size and glued to a paper strip
The door and foot-scraper are also made from balsa wood, with initials and date engraved on the letterbox and upper door-plate.
The “roses around the door” are in fact London Pride
The picture has faded and mellowed with the years. The golden buttercups are now a silvery-white, the vibrant flower colours have faded to soft browns, purples and gold and the deep purple well is almost “grey brick”. Despite this, I still love to look at it, seeing what I could have done differently, what I would do now, and ask myself “shall I start another?”
I gave this creation to my Niece Rebecca and her husband Adam, as a wedding gift in 2006.
