7 Protective Tips for Windshield Dings and Cracks

One important aspect that is often overlooked when caring for an automobile is checking the Windshield. When you have any type of a ding that takes place in the summer or springtime, it could end up being a break in the winter. The majority of people tend to drive more when the weather is warm and it causes vibration. Eventually, the ding can expand and crack the windshield severely.

Running the air-conditioning is also something that typically happens in the warmer weather. According to pros, going from cold to hot quickly or vice versa could lead to the windshield cracking suddenly.

The following tips can help if you have a star or ding in the windshield:

Take a close look at the problem. If the shape is like a cone, appearing as a circle in the glass or looks like a star with points coming out from it, it should be repaired without delay. These are serious problems that can eventually crack the windshield.

Don’t try to repair it yourself or touch it in any way. If you don’t use the right equipment and have proper training, you will contaminate it and make it harder to repair.

If you want to temporarily protect the area, put some packing tape or another type of clear tape over it. It won’t stop it from spreading but it will keep contamination out.

Be careful about getting water in the ding, especially from a car wash. When water and soap contaminate the spot, the high pressure of the wash could end up causing expansion.

When you drive with one of these dings in place, it exposes the problem to the elements and could lead to vibration, making the problem worse.

Be cautious not to slam the doors and don’t close the doors when the windows are up completely. It could add air pressure or extra vibration that could spread the problem further and mean auto glass repair.

Don’t run the heat, A/C or defroster on the highest setting. Avoid parking the car in the sun directly. Changing the temperature rapidly or exposing the area to sunlight can cause a further weakening of the area.
