10 Fashion Commandments For Dressing Your Kids

Children deserve to enjoy Fashion just as much as adults!

Helping your child to understand the wonder of fashion early on is a great way to help them express their Personality through clothing and to build confidence at the same time.

Choosing Clothes to suit your child can be difficult and we all know that they don’t come for cheap either! Children grow so fast that it’s important to invest in key pieces that will last as long as possible and be versatile in the process.

We believe it’s not only about the pieces you choose, it’s about how you arrange them. It’s also key to involve your child in choosing their clothes as that will help them to build a sense of independence and freedom to express who they are.

So, what commandments should you follow when dressing your child?

1. While stylish looks are in fashion, comfort should always win out
You can dress your child in the top trends but it’s no use if they’re not comfortable. We’re not just talking about personal comfort here, but in how the clothes make them feel.

Can your child move in the clothes well? Can they run, jump, and play freely? Do they fit properly, and do they like what they’re wearing?

Of course, you want your child to look stylish, but that shouldn’t come at the expense of their comfort.

2. Accessories can add extra quirk to any outfit
Even the plainest outfit can look seriously impressive with a few carefully chosen accessories! Think belts, hair clips, sunglasses, or hats. These are all great ways to add a pop of color to a basic outfit and to give a hint of personality at the same time.

Ask your child about the types of accessories they want to wear, and you’ll give them that all important input when creating their own kind of style.

3. Don’t be afraid of color
It’s easy to always go for a plain color scheme but playing around with new colors and adding pops here and there is a great way to add personality and style to any outfit.

Avoid the old-fashioned, so-called ‘gender colors’ and let your child choose their favorite colors. Try the latest seasonal colors and don’t be afraid to clash every now and then – bold and daring is a great way to show personality and push the boundaries of style a little.

4. Don’t buy the exact size
When shopping for children’s clothes, it’s always good advice to buy one size up. Children grow fast and you don’t want to purchase a great outfit only for it to be too small or too short in a couple of months.

One size up isn’t going to appear too large when your child is wearing it; if anything, they’ll just have a little extra space. And when they grow, it will fit them perfectly, therefore lasting for that little bit longer.

5. Remember that trends don’t suit everyone
Children’s clothes go through fashion fads just like adults. But, as with adults, not all trends are right for every child. The other issue here is that fashions come and go, some very quickly. For that reason, avoid always buying the latest trends unless they’re something which your child really likes, and which really suits them.

But if you want your child to really look the part, perhaps look for trends that suit their personality.

6. Dress for the weather always
The season might be summer, but what does the weather say? Is it warm and sunny that day? Or is it a little unseasonably chilly? Always dress your child for the weather on the day and don’t pay attention to how it’s “supposed” to be.

Your child doesn’t want to be too hot during the summer or too cold during the winter. They need to be warm enough/cool enough according to the weather and free to head out and play in comfort.

7. Always go age-appropriate
You’ve no doubt noticed that some children’s fashion is extremely grown up. Most children want to dress like adults but not all pieces are age appropriate. Avoid any items that are simply too grown up and instead opt for pieces that are stylish and allow them to express their personalities at the age they are now.

8. Consider their personality
We’ve mentioned the word ‘personality’ several times now and it’s important to consider personality when choosing your child’s clothes. If they love dinosaurs, let them wear things with dinos on! If they’re huge fans of glittery, go for it with the sparkle!

Allowing your child to dress to suit their personality allows them to feel free in who they are and own it. Fashion is a huge part of that process.

9. Choose long-lasting pieces
When shopping for your child’s new clothes, always invest in staples. We’ve already mentioned that trends come and go and if you want your child to be fashionable yet still be able to wear clothing for a while, invest in pieces that last.

Jeans will always be in fashion, as will jean jackets and black pants. Stylish white shirts are unlikely to go out of fashion. These are the types of things to think about.

10. Dress to suit the occasion
What is the event? If they’re going to a birthday party, they need to wear something cute and funky. But, if they’re going to a wedding with you, they’ll need to wear something more formal. Make sure you choose the right look and they’ll fit in and feel great in the process.

These 10 fashion commandments will ensure that your children look fantastic and feel great at all times.
