A Definitive Guide to The Best Kids’ Fairs, Shows, And Festivals Around The World

The world is now opening up following the COVID-19 pandemic and we’re all busy looking at where we can travel to next. It’s long overdue, don’t you think?

We all became so used to hearing the word ‘postponed’ that we started to wonder whether travel would ever become a ‘thing’ again. Well, thankfully it has and it’s far more than a ‘thing,’ it’s a must-do.

The good news is that traveling with your little ones in tow is even easier than ever before and there are countless fairs, shows, festivals, and events that cater to children. So, if you’re stuck for a little inspiration on where to go next, let’s check out some of the best events you might want to head to with your family.

JANUARY – Kiruna Snow Festival, Sweden
Let’s be honest, kids love Snow, right? Well, in this case, you’re getting plenty of it, a magical feel in the air, and there is a chance that you might get to check out the Northern Lights too!

The Kiruna Snow Festival takes place every January (dates vary) in Kiruna, Sweden and it’s packed with snow-filled fun to be had. From snow sculptures to music, snow blowing to skating, and plenty of snowman building and snow fights, this is an event you won’t want to miss.

FEBRUARY – Marrakech International Storytelling Festival, Morocco
Every February, Marrakech transforms itself into a storytelling wonderland for a week. Cafes, museums, marketplaces, and restaurants all host poets and storytellers from all over the world, keen to share their words with those who want to listen. Your little ones will love listening to stories that take them from their current position and transport them to new worlds.

The plus point here is not only that the festival is free, but your children will also learn plenty during their time. That’s a great reason to travel too.

FEBRUARY/MARCH – Madeira Carnival, Portugal
Funchal is a great spot to visit regardless, but for a week in February, into March, the town turns itself into a carnival extravaganza. With floats, parades, dancing, costumes, and fantastic food, this is a great place to take your children and let them not only learn about Portuguese culture and history but have a jolly good time too.

APRIL – Children’s Culture Festival, Reykjavik, Iceland
For five days every April (dates vary), the wonderful city of Reykjavik hosts the annual Children’s Culture Festival. Packed with activities and shows across the city, the festival encourages children to jump right in and be as interactive as possible. There is dancing, music, stories, films, circus shows, and even puppet performances.

It’s a must-do for any family and the surrounding area is also truly stunning and well worth a visit.

MAY – Edinburgh International Children’s Festival, Scotland
The Edinburgh Festival is often thought of as being just for comedy, but did you know there is a children’s version that takes place every May? With three decades of history to back it up, this is a great excuse to visit what is a wonderful city, while enjoying all the entertainment on offer at the same time.

There are fun-filled shows and activities for every age group and all shows are very reasonably priced too, with some even free.

SUMMER – Dieppe International Kite Festival, Normandy, France
Every summer (dates vary from year to year), Dieppe seafront in Normandy hosts the International Kite Festival. Not only is this a great excuse to pack in some beach time, but it’s also sure to thrill your little ones when they see countless colorful kites taking to the skies. The kites also depict animals, shapes, and even dinosaurs too, so this is a definite must-do.

Alongside the festival, you’ll also find other performances popping up around the town, including workshops and competitions.

DECEMBER – Hong Kong WinterFest
Everyone wants to do something special around the holiday period but may not know where to start. For something entirely different, why not head to Hong Kong? While it may not snow in the city, that doesn’t stop the artificial stuff from falling from the sky!

WinterFest is packed with Christmassy fun to be had, including snow, music, performances, food, and general merriment. The center point is the huge Christmas tree that sits in Statue Square and Victoria Harbor is decorated in every wintery theme you can think of.

While there are many other festivals, shows, and events that take place around the year, it’s impossible to head to them all. To narrow down your choices, these are some of the very best.
