Tags: nanny

The decision to hire a Nanny is a difficult one. After all, this is not just someone you’re going to see occasionally or someone not that important in your life.

This is someone who is going to look after and care for the most precious thing in your life! They’re also going to be a part of your family. So, you need to like them!

Of course, you also need to make sure that you know everything you need know before you start the search and that you cover all bases. At the end of the day, you’re going to be employing someone and that means you need a little business know-how too.

We know how challenging it can be to settle on the right person for the job. While we can’t choose for you, because you know exactly what type of person you want, we can help make it easier by giving you a few tips before you start.

Read up on Employment Regulations and Laws
Before you do anything, make sure you know exactly what bases you need to cover in terms of tax and registering the fact you’re employing someone. Failing to do so could land you in very hot water indeed.

You also need to make sure that you pay your nanny a competitive rate. That means doing some research into the latest market rate for a nanny of the qualification level you want and making sure that you pay at least that.

Do Some Research Into Childcare Qualifications
Before you start looking for a nanny, do some research into the specific qualifications you want your nanny to have. There is no solid qualification for a nanny position, as there are many different levels of childcare qualifications out there. What level is important to you? Do you want your nanny to have a degree or do you want them to have a certificate in childcare? Do you want them to have other qualifications too, such as first aid?

By understanding all of this before you start searching, you’ll be able to get someone to fit the bill far more easily.

Brainstorm The Things You Want in Your Nanny
Do you want your nanny to be able to teach a musical instrument to your child? Do you want them to be able to teach your child to swim? What things do you want your nanny to do other than look after your child’s basic needs? We mentioned first aid certification, which is a very important thing to look for, but what else? By knowing what you want in a nanny you’ll be able to find the ideal person without too much re-advertising.

This also means knowing the hours you want your nanny to work, and whether you want them to live in or out. Spend plenty of time brainstorming all of this before putting together your advertisement and then be specific in what you ask for.

Make Sure They’ve Been Background Checked
This is a vital point. Make sure that whoever you choose has been background-checked for a criminal record, etc. This is called a CRB check and it’s the very basic thing you need from your nanny. Only consider hiring any candidates with a totally clear check.

Take Your Time Making Your Decision
After you’ve completed your round of interviews or you’ve shortlisted a series of nannies from the agency you’re working with, take your time making the decision. Picture whether you can consider working with and perhaps even living with this person. Listen to your gut and only go with the person you really feel comfortable with. You don’t have to rush to make a choice, this is an extremely important decision that needs due time and attention.

Don’t underestimate the gravity of choosing a nanny. If you need to seek extra help in making your decision, do so. There is no reason to jump for the first candidate unless you’re completely sure they’re the one for the job.
