Farrell inspired Saracens to Premiership triumph with best piece of leadership yet

OWEN FARRELL sparked Saracens’ sensational fightback in his finest leadership display since being made England captain.

Just three months before Eddie Jones’ side fly to Japan it was fitting that his talisman and playmaker started Sarries’ record 11-point comeback to lift the Premiership trophy and bring home the Double.

Farrell spoke to his team-mates after Henry Slade extended Exeter’s advantage to 11 points with 21 minutes left

The fly-half delivered a stirring speech beneath the Twickenham posts after England teammate Henry Slade Scored for Exeter Chiefs to make it 27-16 with just 21 minutes left on the clock.

But teammate and Jamie George revealed: “Owen, at the time when Henry Slade scored in the corner, the way that he spoke he said: ‘We’ve got a choice to make, we either roll over and die or have a crack at this’.

“He spoke brilliantly and he did the same against Leinster in the Champions Cup final.”

Sarries boss Mark McCall reckons that big-game mentality shown by Farrell in the 10-try thriller is great news for Jones and England.

It was then the 27-year-old’s superb chipped kick-off and a cross-field kick for Liam Williams’ try in immediate response that had Sarries within four points in a flash.

And No.9 Richard Wigglesworth also sent a message to the watching Jones that at 35 he can be the man to solve England’s lack of a genuine world-class back-up to Ben Youngs and make it to his third World Cup.

McCall said: “I think they can carry over.

“You have been in this situation before and you know what to say because our England players led the charge behind the posts when Henry Slade scored.

“They were the ones who were calm, they were the ones who were: ‘So What? Let’s properly go for it now because we have got nothing to lose’.

“I thought Owen and Wiggy were masterful how they controlled the last 20 minutes. They just couldn’t escape in their final third and that was down to how well they managed that.”

‘S*** FEELING’

On the other side Exeter try-scorer Slade has now been runner-up to Saracens three times.

The devastated centre said: “That’s probably the worst I’ve ever felt. We had them. We were on top for the whole game.

“We were so close, but every time we got near to going two or three scores up they stayed in touching distance. It’s a s*** feeling.

“Before the game a lot of people wrote us off and I think that was a load of b*******. People said we never had a chance and that motivates you more.”

And Chiefs and England will be hoping for good news from the outcome of crocked Jack Nowell’s ankle injury today after he left the stadium on crutches.

Slade added: “I want to know the stats of how many tackles he broke in the first half. He’s so strong in his middle and his balance.

“He beat so many defenders and got us on the front foot. We did miss him when he went off, but he played outstandingly for most of the game.”
