Great Ideas for Unique Valentine’s Day Gifts

Guys, I have a confession to make: I don’t love Valentine’s Day. Yes, when I growing up and my father used to bring my mother, my sister, and I each a box of chocolates on Valentine’s morning, that was rad. Yes, when I was a teenager and my boyfriend and I would exchange gifts and get all dolled up and go to dinner, it was great.

As I’ve gotten older, though, the holiday has lost its magic. Husband, however, is a hopeless romantic. And he’s beating me at the gift game right now (I’m very competitive. Yes, gift giving is a competition. I want to give the best one!).

So here are some great online shops with awesome gifts to, well, help you win Valentine’s Day. Whatever that might mean to you.

UncommonGoods.com

This shop is filled with lots of unique gifts, ranging from romantic to funny to practical to kinky and everything in between. The Personalized Hearts Four Across game is absolutely adorable. A Connect-Four-like concoction, this handmade game crafted from heirloom-quality maple wood and can be personalized with names, anniversary dates, or messages.

Away from your sweetie? There’s a lamp for that. This Long Distance Touch Lamp Set is synced so that when you touch yours, its mate begins to glow, no matter where it is. How cool is that? You can let your loved one know you’re thinking of them without saying a word. Or, you know, maybe you fell into it, but still, it makes them feel good, right ;)?

Porn for Women. I mean, I laughed out loud just looking at the title of this one. This set of cards is filled with handsome, often shirtless men with accompanying sexy phrases such as, “Have another piece of cake. I don’t like you looking so thin,” and “There he was – shirtless, his muscles flexing as he vacuumed the carpet…and she hadn’t even asked him to.” Okay, yeah, it’s kind of sexist. But let’s not take things so seriously, eh?

Now, although Star Wars paraphernalia doesn’t really do it for me, I know I have at least one friend who would love to get something Star Wars themed for V-Day. Actually, that’s not entirely true.

I started doing this thing a few years ago where when my husband sends me “I love you,” in a text, I send him back a meme of Harrison Ford as Han Solo with the words, “I Know.” That is one of my favorite ad libs of all time. So my husband got me a t-shirt for Christmas with a photo of Han Solo and the words, “I Know,” on it, and I love it. I’m kind of a nerd.

ThinkGeek has everything: dragos, kittens, unicorns, Star Trek and Star Wars. Here’s some of my personal favorites.

A Corgi Bouquet. Who doesn’t want a corgi bouquet? I think this one speaks for itself. And if you aren’t interested in corgis, there are plenty of other bouquets to choose from, including dragons, kittens, unicorns, and even books.

I’m partial to this one because of the I love you/I know thing, but this Star Wars leather bracelet is sure to look cool on anyone. The printing is subtle enough so that it doesn’t scream STAR WARS!!!! At everyone who sees it.

Buying for a bath lover? Who could resist this I Love My Geek 8-bit Cupcake Bath Bomb that looks and smells like a real cupcake. I don’t know anything about the 8-bit part, but I just got hungry, y’all. And it’s cute. And not animal tested.

The Grommet

I love The Grommet. Their products are usually still kind of in the beginning stages, so there’s some seriously ingenious stuff on here.

Take, for instance, the Love Tuner. The Lovetuner holds a single-note flute that plays 528 Hz, also called the “Love Frequency.” Many people find that this note calms and reduces stress. I have one of these and I use it when I’m meditating or journaling.

Or how about a No Place Like Home state scented candle? This could be a great gift for a guy or a girl. I wonder if Ohio smells like a farm…

Then there’s The Love Game, a set of cards with a series of questions designed to open up communication and foster trust between two people. Questions like, What is your most treasured memory? Will encourage a deeper conversation between you and your partner, whether at the beginning of a relationship or years into it. I can say with certainty this is a conversation I’ve never had with anyone. See, I think I need to buy this one.

Etsy.com

Ah, Etsy. You’re like a warm hug. When all else fails, Etsy will be there for your gift giving needs. Whether you’re looking for jewelry or a chocolate Playstation control or ADULT Valentine’s cards, Etsy’s got it all for you, man.

So Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be just about cards or candy or flowers — have some fun with it! I mean, it doesn’t have to be about gifts at all, but since this is a gift guide I’ll try to stay on topic.
