If you’ve ever gotten a Makeup Stain on your clothing, you will know how disastrous it can be. Just like magnets attract any metal-based object, no matter how careful we are, our clothing still end up welcoming (at least once) every imaginable makeup stain onto its surface. P.S. Especially when we’re wearing light colors clothing on that day (face palm). Hence, today I’ve pulled together a guide for how to remove different makeup stains from clothes. Regardless you’re dealing with an oil-based makeup, mascara or lipstick, you’re bound to find what you need here! Keep calm and read on to find out more.

1. Foundations

Foundation is always the one product that get smeared frequently on our clothes when we’re changing or perhaps when you’re leaning on your boyfriend’s shoulder! Your first inclination might be to reach for the makeup remover. BUT think again, the oil is only meant for the skin, and it might actually make the situation worse. If you’re using liquid foundation, it’ll quickly absorb into the fabrics of your clothing. Hence, the sooner you can get to the stain, the better.

1. All you need is scrapping any excess foundation with a blunt knife, plastic knife or spoon.
2. Then, gently blot the stain with a clean damp paper towel to remove more of the product. Make sure you use a lifting motion to sponge out the foundation without smearing it deeper into the fabric.
3. Next, pour a few drops of detergent onto the affected area and use your fingers to work the solution into the stain.
4. Then, work it into the stain in a circular motion with a toothbrush.
5. Lastly, launder the fabric and ay it flat to dry.

2. Lipsticks

Lipstick and Lipgloss stains, they just happen, either you end up kissing your bae’s shirt or smudge it on your favourite dress in a rush! Lipstick stains can be a little tricky to be removed due to its intense pigments and moisturising ingredients. Thus, make sure you treat it as soon as possible to get a better result. P.S blot, NEVER rub! We tend to rub and scrub it frantically whenever we notice a swipe of lipstick. But, trust me by rubbing the stain, it only makes the stain set and spread even deeper into the fabric. While, blotting it with some water will lei it be until you get home.

1. Get yourself a dish soap as it is safe to use on washable materials without staining or discolouring fabric.
2. Then, begin blotting the stain with a clean tissue to remove any excess colour.
3. Spritz the stain with clean water, BUT don’t soak the fabric.
4. Gently rub a drop of the soap into the stain and let it sit for 10 – 15 minutes.
5. Then, use a clean towel to rub the soap into the stain in a circular motion from the outer edges towards the middle.
6. Lastly, finish off by dabbing the section of fabric clean with a dry towel. If the stain isn’t completely removed, repeat the process as necessary.

3. Powder Blush, Bronzer, Highlighter and Eyeshadow

When it comes to makeup in powder form such as blush, bronzer, eyeshadow or even highlighter, our own instincts can be our worst enemy. We tend to be fooled by thinking brushing the powder away will help. However, the problem is by doing so it can have the effect of spreading the spill over a bigger area, or worse, grinding it into the fabric.

Sprinkle says that a strip of Scotch tape is enough to lift out the color, and a quick buffing of a deodorant sponge should remove it altogether.

1. All you need is try to blow the powder away. You can either use a hairdryer or you can just literally blow away. Don’t forget to make a wish (hehe just kidding).
2. If the stain is quite serious, treat it with makeup remover. But, don’t flood the stain with too much liquid as it will cause the makeup to spread and lead to even bigger problem. Just apply the remover to a cotton ball and dab it on the stain.
3. Once the pigment is gone, flush the garment with cold running water to push any remaining remover out of the fabric.

Second Alternative

1. Take a strip of cellophane tape to lift out the colour.
2. Then, do a quick buffing with a deodorant sponge and the stain should be removed.

4. Mascara and Eyeliner

Mascara and eyeliner, they can be stubborn to be removed as it usually already takes a pretty powerful makeup remover and a lot of elbow grease to remove. If you already spend so much time remove it from your face, you would think a big, greasy mascara smear would be a death sentence for your favourite top, but don’t worry with the following steps, your clothes will be saved!

1. Dab a little bit of dish soap onto the mascara stain.
2. Let it sit for about 10-15 minutes, then rub the dish soap into the stain and scrub under warm water. This should get most of the stain out of the fabric.
3. To ensure the stain is completely removed, launder the garment immediately either by hand or in the washing machine.
4. If you want to be extra cautious, you can treat the spot with a stain-removing spray.
5. Lastly, let the garment dry flat instead of putting it in the dryer, especially if the stain isn’t completely out. This is due to the heat of the dryer can cause the stain to set.

5. Deodorant

I know deodorant is not a makeup product but it tends to get on our clothing all the time. Besides, deodorant tend to develop a crusty, thick stain that can be difficult to remove over the time.

1.  Using a pair of nylon stockings or a dryer sheet, rub the fabric against the deodorant mark and it’ll almost immediately come out off of the clothing.
