Real Talk: Should You Quit Porn or Is it Ever Ok to Watch It?

Women are still far more prudish than men about watching porn—but should we quit Porn altogether? And even if they are watching, they are unlikely to admit it.  In the age of sexual liberation for women why is this still so? The San Francisco-based sex therapist, Vanessa Marin, told Refinery 29 that: “Female sexuality as a whole is seen as more taboo than male sexuality, so most women are ashamed to acknowledge any aspect of their sexuality.” But does watching porn have benefits and are women limiting themselves by not exploring porn on occasion? Well, think of it this way if people who read a lot of books tend to be smarter, perhaps women who watch a tiny bit of porn may actually better in bed.
Before we explore this further, let’s begin with what online data shows about the number of women actually watching porn on the Internet.  Yep, you guessed it; the numbers are still pretty low. According to Psychology Todaybetween 8% and 20% of women are visiting porn sites with any regularity. And the data suggests that there’s no big difference in numbers for those watching hardcore or for women sites either. The magazine also pointed to two fundamentals with women and porn: Fact 1, most women don’t like porn (probably due its demeaning factors and cartoonish characters!) and Fact 2, women who do watch porn tend to like the same kind of porn that men do.

Hold on though before you decide to quit porn for good. According to Women’s Health, a 2014 study by IFOP found that 59% of women who have watched porn have done so while having sex with their partner.  So, this means that on their own, most women won’t seek Debby Does Dallas, but if her partner is in to it, then she’s game.  Now, we’re on to something.
If you’re looking to spice the sex up in your relationship, consider agreeing to your partner’s request for you to join him or her for a porn-watching session, or proposing it yourself.   Aside from porn supplying some great, ahem, pointers, and new tricks to try, it allows you to show your partner exactly how you want it. ‘Ah, let’s try that!’ is much easier to say than explaining it or drawing it. As Women’s Health reports, watching porn also brings you closer to your partner in that “we’re so naughty together” special kind of way. It’s your little secret together and 58% of women said it had a positive effect on their relationship according a survey by UK sex toy and lingerie store Ann Summers. Watching porn solo also has its benefits on your overall health. In another study, 85% of women reported watching porn as an escape and 23% said it helped them relieve stress. And hey, reaching orgasm is also less fattening than attacking a pint of chocolate ice cream by yourself.

So, it’s totally ok to watch porn as long as you are aware that many aspects about it are misleading and pure theatrics. Plus, in the naughty age of Fifty Shades of Grey, there’s so much fun variety these days with porn categories like “amateur” or “female friendly” or “feminist porn” that if you dig around, you’ll be able find what makes you comfortable and downright turns you on.
