Does Gay Pride + Gay Marriage = Summer of Love

Gay Marriage, Gay Pride, Caitlyn Jenner, and Kate Moss

by Roy Steele

Here we are a week into June of 2015, and like you, I’m wondering whether this will be known as the “gay summer of love.” It’s just a matter of weeks before we find out if the Supreme Court of the United States has ruled that marriage is a fundamental right for all Americans. All we can do right now is wait.

On May 22, 2015 the citizens of Ireland voted overwhelmingly to amend their Constitution, and allow gay marriage. Ireland was the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage by popular vote. Does the Irish vote portend good things to come here in the states? I certainly hope so.

June means that it’s gay pride month, and President Obama issued his seventh presidential proclamation in a row, declaring that June is LGBT Pride month.
In communities throughout the country, barriers that limit the potential of LGBT Americans have been torn down, but too many individuals continue to encounter discrimination and unfair treatment.  My Administration supports efforts to ban the use of conversion therapy for minors because the overwhelming scientific evidence demonstrates that it can cause substantial harm.
For countless young people, it is not enough to simply say it gets better; we must take action too.  We continue to address bullying and harassment in our classrooms, ensuring every student has a nurturing environment in which to learn and grow. Across the Federal Government, we are working every day to unlock the opportunities all LGBT individuals deserve and the resources and care they need.  Too many LGBTQ youth face homelessness and too many older individuals struggle to find welcoming and affordable housing; that is why my Administration is striving to ensure they have equal access to safe and supportive housing throughout life. We are updating our National HIV/AIDS Strategy to better address the disproportionate burden HIV has on communities of gay and bisexual men and transgender women.
All people deserve to live with dignity and respect, free from fear and violence, and protected against discrimination, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2015 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month.  I call upon the people of the United States to eliminate prejudice everywhere it exists, and to celebrate the great diversity of the American people.
You can’t go anywhere these days without hearing someone talk about Caitlyn Jenner. I think that Caitlyn is one of the most courageous individuals on our planet.  I applaud her willingness to share the long and arduous road she’s traveled, to find herself, in order to live an authentic and fulfilling life. It’s an incredible story.

Anyone who criticizes or discounts Caitlyn Jenner, is stupid and ignorant, or extremely jealous. I know the haters are out there, and pray that God has mercy on their souls.

There was a gossip piece that caught my eye today involving supermodel Kate Moss. The article said that “Kate Moss had to be escorted off a flight by police officers at London Luton Airport Sunday due to disruptive behavior.” The “disruptive behavior” was Kate calling the pilot a “basic bitch.” Kate Moss is not disruptive, and it’s likely that her terrific sense of humor didn’t sit well with the pilot.

I once flew on a cross-country flight from New York’s JFK to Los Angeles LAX, with Kate, Naomi Campbell, and my pal Linda Evangelista. There were a couple of gay flight attendants among the cabin crew, who were very excited that three of the top supermodels in the world, were on their flight.

The gay cabin crew set up a small area in the belly of the plane, under the first class cabin, with a pile of blankets and pillows. They invited the four of us to leave the confines of the first class cabin, to sit on the blankets covering the cold and dirty cargo hold floor. We gladly accepted the invitation, and gossiped, laughed, drank lots of vodka, and smoked cigarettes, for most of the flight. Good times. Really good times!
