How Do Google Rankings Work?

What Are The Most Important Factors For Ranking Your Website In Google?

Everyone would love to see their website on the first page in Google and other search engines.

But that just isn’t possible.

So how do you know what Google is looking at when deciding what website to rank?

Well, these are called ranking factors and I have the answer right here for you.

But first, I want you to know that I am not going to fill this post with fluff or dazzle you with graphics.

This will be straight-to-the-point facts that you should 100% read and implement.

The statements here are from an independent study done on nearly 12 million Google search results in April 2020. (I did not conduct this experiment).

Read closely and understand that if you can ensure that your own website follows these guidelines, you WILL outrank your opponents.

This is the real deal.

Let’s take a look at the results of the study:

  1. A website’s overall link authority has a huge correlation with higher rankings.  In other words, you need authoritative websites linking to your website.
  2. The number of backlinks to your website matters greatly. Amazingly, the number one Google result has on average nearly 4 times the number of backlinks positions two through ten have. You need to be chasing high quality backlinks constantly.
  3. Page content with a grade of “high” (Clearscope) dominates pages that don’t cover a topic completely. To put it simply, your content matters!
  4. The idea that a good page load speed will result in first page rankings is not backed up by the data.
  5. The more domains that link to your site, the better. It is preferable to have 5 backlinks from 5 domains that 100 backlinks from 3 domains.
  6. There is no correlation between first page rankings and putting your keyword in a title tag.
  7. The average word count for a page ranked in the top ten is around 1500 words.
  8. There is no correlation between HTML page size and first page rankings.
  9. There is a mild correlation between URL length and rankings. Shorter URL’s are better.
  10. There is no correlation between Schema markup and first page rankings.
  11. Time on site is a definite ranking factor. The longer visitors stay on your site, the higher you will rank.  Again, make your content engaging.

This is data that is proven, don’t ignore it!
