As someone who works to assist our clients with their Search Engine Optimization (SEO) as well as runs a marketing technology publication, you can only imagine how many organic search engine platforms that I’ve experimented with and purchased subscriptions for over the years. In all honesty, I’m growing quite frustrated with the bells and whistles that every SEO platform continues to add. I personally feel like the vast majority of checks and charts are absolutely useless… especially to someone with no experience in search engine optimization.

One of our clients rolled out a new template on their Shopify site and I instantly put a task in to review their page code to ensure that all the necessary elements were included on the page for the page to be optimized for search engines. After the meeting, I went to a couple of the comprehensive SEO platforms that we were using, and guess what? They didn’t have a simple tool to just go crawl a single page on the site and provide feedback back.

Granted, you don’t actually need a tool to do this work. I could have viewed the source of the page as well as utilized developer tools to measure page speed performance to produce my own report. But that takes time that I didn’t have… so I did some searching for a free tool that I could run a single web page through and found Seobility.

Utilizing Seobility’s free SEO checker, I was able to quickly identify that the template lacked an h1 tag, an important element for search engines. The report provides a breakdown and overall score across 6 key areas of focus:

1. Meta information – the page title, meta description, crawlability, canonical URL, language, alternate hreflang links, rel next and previous tags, domain, page URL, character set encoding, doctypes, favicon, and rich snippets including Opengraph and Schema.
2. Page quality – the word count, stop words, keywords, paragraphs, number of words per sentence, placeholders, frames, mobile optimization, strong tags, image alt tags (what a breakdown of images), social network links, additional markup, and SSL.
3. Page structure – H1 heading, other headings (H1-H6) usage, and structure (including if you have unnecessary empty headings.
4. Link Structure – Internal links, anchor text, amount of internal links, and external links (with a list of them).
5. Server Configuration – HTTP redirects, HTTP Header, performance (including what CSS and JavaScript files are loaded), along with the overall size of the page.
6. External Factors – Any backlinks that can be found, Facebook popularity, and whether your site is listed on Webwiki.

Additionally, your robots.txt file is displayed, a search preview of the page, as well as the most important words on the page (utilizing their TF-IDF analysis).
