5 Tips On How To Create Stunning Flatlays

The composition is key when mastering the art of a good flatlay.

It’s 2017 and I bet every second person is a little Instagram addict, but how can you not? That app has everything you need and ever wanted. It can turn the girl from next door into an internet sensation and make your cat famous overnight.

When it come to Instagram there is one photography type that has made itself to the top and is considered to be the new black – The Flatlay?? What’s that you wonder, well it’s the art of carefully positioning items and taking a photo from above. Every Instagram addict does it and the flatlay dedicated accounts have million of followers showcasing the best of the best every day.

Mastering the art of Flatlays needs a lot of dedication, practice and experimenting; read our 5 tips here to create Instagram-worthy flatlays:

1. Lighting

Natural lighting is the one true love for flatlays – it’s what decides between a good and a bad photo. Walk around your house/flat and find the perfect spot through experimenting. I personally always take my photos either in front of the window or sometimes in front of the open main door (I may get a few strange looks for that one, but hey, dedication to the gram).

2. Background

You don’t want your background to distract from the items in the photo, but instead to compliment them. Less is more; think basics, neutral or pastel tones.

Depending on the item’s, texture can work really well too. Beauty products on a fluffy carpet, food on a wooden table or bed sheets with books. Be chic and don’t let the background overpower the photo.

3. Composition is key

Aesthetically pleasing is the answer. Don’t clutter your images with products all over each other, leave space and be creative. Play around and experiment to find your personal style.

4. Pick a theme

Be consistent and stick to one theme. Pampering at home, breakfast in bed, night out and so on. It can be so overwhelming having a load of different product in one photo and trying to figure out what it’s about.

Additionally, make sure your colours compliment each other. You want your products to work in harmony, so stick to one colour scheme per flatlay.

5. Editing Apps

We all edit our photos, I can’t remember the last time I took a photo and didn’t immediately upload it to my editing app to put a filter over it. Obviously, don’t overdo it, increase the brightness a bit, make it sharper and maybe use the detail tool to enhance certain features.

I have my style, a theme and always stick to that so my editing progress is always the same. Find something that works for you.
