GCSE English Language - Starter

This starter activity was originally used alongside a study of the article 'Care about horses? Then you should boycott the Grand National'. The article is a set text within the Edexcel GCSE English Language Anthology. Easily used as a starter activity or recap, learners are to get into small teams and choose a name for their horse. Each team takes it in turns to roll a dice and then the tutor asks a question related to the previous session, the session or anything to do with language. If the team gets the question correct, they get to move their horse on a grid shown by PowerPoint. The team that crosses the finish line are obviously the winners.

The game can also be adapted. For example, learners can compete against each other in teams of 5 and the tutor can distribute a laminated copy of the resource for each group. They will probably need their own markers for the task if completed separately in groups.
