International Women's Day - Writing about an Inspirational Woman

Level 1 - Writing Articles

It was International Women's Day on March 8th and I used the theme in my level 1 English class. The session mainly involved looking at vocabulary related to the day (suffragette, voting, democracy etc), a matching task where learners matched images of important women with their names, a reading activity and discussion based on the topic as well as covering equality and diversity (gender today) and finally a writing task based on inspirational women (personal to the learner). The topic was great for embedding British Values.

Before the class were planning and writing their articles, I asked them to go into small groups to discuss and write down their opinions on what makes someone inspirational. It was interesting to see and discuss how our views of inspiration may differ.

I also encouraged my learners to think about the layout and purpose of an article - how could they engage and interest the reader? What catchy headlines could they use?

Once they shared their ideas, learners then wrote about women who they believed to be inspirational. It was great to see a variety of articles. They were mainly based on family members but some did write about Queen Elizabeth II, Beyonce and Angelina Jolie!
