“I’m very excited about getting a job here,”
Uber driver, Oluwagbenga couldn’t hide the smile as he exited the Entry Level Job Fair hosted at Southern Careers Institute Austin on Friday, January 19th, 2018.
When asked which employers he was eyeing for career opportunities, he laughed. “I think I love everybody!”
“Everybody” included over 20 companies in the Austin-area hiring or recruiting for healthcare, business, technology or skilled trades with little to no experience. A few of the representatives came from Seton Health Systems, We Are Blood, BBVA Compass Bank, Intellectechs and Spectrum. Whether local or nationwide, the organizations all had something in common. “Great people with great attitudes” to train and grow within their roles, as Kelly Manzano of We Are Blood, a non-profit dedicated to serving the community through blood donations, summarized.
Job seekers are often discouraged when it comes to finding careers when they are just starting out or when they are changing careers, because of the notion that all jobs require experience in the industry. The reality is that the average person changes jobs 10 – 15 times during his/her career (the Balance). And let’s not forget that all jobs require some kind of training. Getting an education at a career-training school like Southern Careers Institute can also better prepare you for the job search because they help with resume-building, preparing for interviews, and are teaching skills that employers require for the jobs they are hiring for.
A positive attitude, Kelly mentioned, is what she looks for in an employee, and it’s the one attribute that can’t be taught. Despite the diversity of the applicants, this fortunately seemed to be ingrained in many of them, including Oluwagbenga. When asked about who she met at the Entry Level Job Fair that day, she mentioned, “Excited people with great smiles, very motivated and determined to find that great fit.”
