Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a Patanjali research institute on Wednesday. The institute is run by spiritual leader and yoga guru Baba Ramdev, in Uttarakhand’s Haridwar.

The institute claimed to have developed wheat and Chilli Seeds that can more double the yield. They have come up with these ‘miraculous’ seeds in an attempt to rise from the criticism that they faced after recently some products of Patanjali failed the laboratory test and were later removed from army canteen shelves.

The company claims that the new wheat and chilli seeds will be able to fetch yields of up to 28 and 47 quintals per acre respectively – this estimate is more than double the usual amount. Patanjali has also marketed the seeds as “swadeshi”.
Baba Ramdev says, “Patanjali agro scientists have proved time and again that, high yielding and high quality produce can be obtained without chemicals,”

But scientists disagree, they claim that the promised yield is far from “chamatkari” and can be obtained from other brands of seed as well. WH 1105, a variety of wheat seed that was developed by Haryana Agriculture University, Hisar, also claims to yield 28 quintals per acre.
