Financial pressures led 39-year-old Salma Begum to go to Saudi Arabia from Hyderabad on a housemaid visa, but due to two agents, she was instead sold for Rs 3 lakh and ended up stranded in a foreign land, facing torture, mental and physical harassment.
The ‘Kafil’ or Salma’s work sponsors in Saudi Arabia have created a hellish existence for the middle-aged woman, whom they initially tried forcing into a contract marriage and when that failed, began torturing her.
Salma’s daughter Sameena reached out to Kanchanbagh police and despite several complaints against the agents Akram and Shafi, her mother remains trapped with the kafil in Saudi Arabia.

“My mother is in trouble in Saudi. She wants to return home but her Kafil is not allowing her to get back here. I even met Akram requesting him to get my mother back, but he did nothing so far. We went to Kanchanbagh police station, but the police appear to be unmoved by the matter and has not taken any action so far,” Times of India quoted Sameena as saying.
“The torture started when she denied to a contract marriage with her Kafil in Saudi Arabia. She however informed me sending message that she was sold by agents. so the Kafil does not want to send her back,” Sameena added.

Pressured by police, Akram assured Sameena that her mother would be brought home by February 20, 2017 but even by April, Salma Begum remains trapped in Saudi Arabia.
Trapped by the kafil, Salma sent an audio message to her daughter Sameena, asking the Indian government to help bring her back.
“I am trying all efforts to bring my mother back home. I kindly request Telangana and central governments to bring my mother back to India,” Sameena Begum appealed.
