It all started 85 years back when an architect by the name Walter Sykes George decided to build a Theatre hall. He inaugurated the theatre in the year 1932 and called it ‘Regal Cinema’, situated in the heart of Delhi, Connaught Place.
For years to come the cinema hall held many plays and showcased iconic movies, generations of audiences came and went but this landmark remained strong.
Today is the day when this building, that has held screenings of movies of all eras, closes down! Tonight will be its final show and the owners chose Raj Kapoor’s ‘Mera Naam Joker’ and ‘Sangam’ to be the last movies to be shown in the theatre.
Vishal Chaudhary, one of the owners of the Regal theatre, says he decided to show these two movies because requests came pouring in when it was revealed that the cinema hall is to shut down.
He also added that Raj Kapoor made sure that all his movies were screened in Regal and Prithviraj Kapoor used to perform his plays in the theatre – so it will be the best way for the theatre to bid farewell.
Currently the theatre is showing Anushka Sharma’s Phillauri and tonight at 9 the curtains will come down forever, after the final show of Raj Kapoo’s iconic blockbusters.
A legacy that went on for 8 long decades is to end, but it will be remembered for years to come!
