Nation celebrates ‘Vijay Diwas’ to mark the victory of India over Pakistan

New Delhi: India, on December 16, celebrities Vijay Diwas to commemorate victory over Pakistan in 1971 war. Every year on this day, President, Prime Minister, Lieutenant General and entire nation pay tribute to the martyrs to sacrificed their lives to get the victory over Pakistan.

In 1971, on this day, the Chief of the Pakistani forces, General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, along with 93 thousand troops, had surrendered to the Indian Army and Mukti Bahini, calling an end to the Indo-Pak war of 1971.

The end of the war also resulted in subsequent secession of East Pakistan into Bangladesh.

Remembering the martyred, President Ram Nath Kovind took to Twitter and posted, “The nation pays tribute to those who lost their lives in that valiant effort.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said, on Vijay Diwas today, the nation remembers the indomitable spirit of the brave soldiers who fought in 1971. In a tweet, Mr Modi said, their unwavering courage and patriotism ensured the country is safe. He said, their service will always inspire every Indian.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman along with Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba, Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa and Vice Chief of Army Lieutenant General Devraj Anbu paid tributes to the Martyrs at Amar Jawan Jyoti.
