BJP has eyes set on Tripura in addition to Meghalaya in NE

Agartala: The Communist Party of India ( Marxist) which has been ruling Tripura for  the past 24 years may face a tough challenge from the Bharatiya Janata Party in the assembly elections next year as party has drafted six chief ministers to campaign in the state during next two  months. In addition, the party president Amit Shah will be camping here  for some time from first week of next month.

Six political heads of the states who will campaign there include Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Jhakhand chief minister Raghuwar Das.
General secretary of the party and incharge of  North-east Ram Madhav was here on Sunday to work out some other strategies to give a tough fight to the Left Party which has been ruling the state for past  24 years.
Although Madhav has claimed that his party would end the left party rule, it appears to be a remote possibility at present. Tripura is the second state in the country after Kerala which has a left party government.
The BJP’s hope is based on improved performance of the party in the by-election held in Khowal assembly constituency in November last. It has been emboldened by victory in assembly elections in Manipur recently and formation of government there. It is the third state ruled by the party in the north-east.
That the party has taken up the job to improve its performance further in the state is clear from that fact that it has enrolled two lakh members in the past few months.
The task to dethrone the CPM is, however, not easy.  It has been steadily improving its seat tally in the assembly since 1998. From 38 in the year 1998 it went up to 46 in 2008 and further to 50 in 2013.
The state has 60 assembly seats out of which 20 are reserved for the Tribals and 10 for the scheduled castes.
