New Delhi: While the country was busy in elections, the neighbour which has been sending terrorists across the border, was busy drafting a new proposal: to grant statehood to Gilgit-Baltistan region which is a part of the undivided Jammu and Kashmir province. The area known as PoK has been illegally held by Pakistan.
An amendment to Pakistan constitution is required for the purpose which the country is willing to make.
The issue has caught the attention of authorities here who have taken the matter seriously. It was raised in the United Nations Human Rights Council at Geneva on Wednesday by an Indian representative, Junail Qureshi.
He told the Council that the region is an integral part of India’s Jammu and Kashmir state and that Pakistan has no “legal right over it”.
The representative has also pointed out that Pakistan -China economic corridor passes through the area which has been constructed without proper authorisation of the stake holders.
The area is lived by a large number of Shia Muslims who are more close to India than Pakistan and who have often complained against excesses committed by the Islamic country on them. The Modi government may raise the issue at some other fora and in other friendly countries soon.
