Emigrate to Australia Skills List
If you’re thinking about moving to Australia on a Permanent Skilled Visa, that’s the 189 and 190 visa subclasses you’re going to have to satisfy some key criteria before you can even think about undertaking a skills assessment and formal application with the Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection.
The very first thing to do is make sure you have an occupation that’s on an emigrate to Australia Skills list. It can be daunting to match your specific occupation to the emigrate to Australia skills list so if you’re in any doubt or would like to take advantage of our free consultation feel free to take our online visa assessment.
Obviously just having an occupation on an emigrate to Australia skills list isn’t enough in itself, you’ll still need:
To score 60 points on the Australian Points System for immigration
If you’re an Accountant you may need slightly more points
Be aged under 45 on the date you’re called forward for your visa. Remember that the whole process can take anything up to two years and you’ll need to be aged under 45 at the very last stage in the project to be eligible
Have competent English i.e. demonstrate this by taking IELTS or similar
Be in sound medical condition
Have a (relatively) clean criminal background. If you do have any concerns here please do take our online visa assessment so we can better gauge your individual chances of being able to emigrate to Australia.
Have a positive Skills Assessment before submitting an expression of interest for Permanent Residency
Some occupations on the emigrate to Australia skills list are easy to place and identify, such as:
Emigrating to Australia as a Nurse
Bricklayer Australia
Welder Australia
Immigrating to Australia as an Electrician
Emigrating to Australia as a Teacher
Paramedics Australia
Carpenter Australia
However, some will be more ambiguous and we’ll need to dig into these in a little more detail.

Is it just one emigrate to Australia skills list?
This is an interesting one because here it gets tricky. The answer is yes as far as the 189 visa is concerned. The 189 Permanent Residency Visa is the top tier PR visa for Australia and allows you to:
Live and work in Australia without restriction
Take your immediate family with you because they also get PR automatically
Enter and leave at will with no need for any more visas
Access Medicare and education
Access financial services at the same rates as Australian Citizens
Sponsor other family members to Australia after two years
Eventually apply for Dual Nationality and Citizenship
The 189 emigrate to Australia skills list is called the Medium and Long Term Strategic Skills List, feel free to search for your occupation below

If your occupation is on the above emigrate to Australia skills list then great, we’ll need to start now examining your potential points score in more detail alongside your employment history and formal qualifications
Take our online visa assessment today for more details
If you only have 55 points at this stage you’ll need to emigrate to Australia on a 190 visa. All occupations on the main emigrate to Australia skills list are on the 190 list by default and with your application for a 190 visa you’ll be awarded a further 5 points automatically, effectively bringing your total score up to 60.
If you don’t have an occupation on the above list then you’ll need to identify your occupation on the 190 list, the most up to date version of which can be searched here:
Emigrate to Australia skills list for the 190 visa
If you’re on the 190 emigrate to Australia skills list here’s where it gets even more complicated (if that’s possible!). Remember above when we noted the 190 permanent residency visa is done on a State by State basis instead of the National level? Well, this means the individual States and Territories have their own unique emigrate to Australia skills lists. Therefore, just because your occupation appears on the 190 skills list it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re on a (new) home run just yet.
Many of the individual states and territories have their own specific caveats over above the 60 point immigration checklist. Western Australia for example recently slashed their state specific emigrate to Australia skills list from 178 occupations to a measly 18.
So, even though you have an occupation match against the 190 emigrate to Australia skills list we’ll need to dig further to identify which particular Australian States are sponsoring the occupation code and, crucially, what are the additional caveats imposed by theses Sponsoring States and Territories.
Western Australia Emigrate to Australia Skills List
As we’ve already mentioned, the Western Australia emigrate to Australia skills list was slashed from 178 occupations to just 18.

Caution must be applied when looking at the South Australia emigrate to Australia skills list, there are many, many caveats in place relating to things such as visa type or specific points score required. South Australia for example often require a total immigration points score far in excess of the 60 points required at National Australia level.
Here at Lets Go Global we think this was a rather extreme knee jerk reaction to new legislative powers although, as with everything ‘Immigration’ we’re here to defend and progress your immigration rights, providing world class levels of advocacy to our clients. It’s down to the Australian Government to set and implement immigration policy.
What is the 190 visa and how is it different from the 189 visa?
The only difference between the two is that the 190 is processed on a State by State basis as opposed to being on the National level. Simply put, you’ll need to undertake to live and work in your sponsoring state for a period of two years. After this time you’ll be free to live and work anywhere in Australia just like the 189 Visa and the rest of the benefits remain the same.
How often do the lists change?
The emigrate to Australia skills lists are updated every six months after consultation with the Australian Department of Employment and the Australian Department of Education and Training. The thinking behind this is that jobs for Australians are protected whilst critical key skills shortages are addressed.
What happens if my occupation is removed from the emigrate to Australia skills list?
If your nominated occupation is removed from the emigrate to Australia skills list before you lodge your application then you are no longer eligible to emigrate. If you’ve received an invitation to apply or state nomination before your occupation is removed from the skills lists then you are fine to continue the application. Please remember, these lists are under increasing amounts of scrutiny at a political level and here at Lets Go Global we expect to see deeper and further reaching changes than ever before.
Still Confused? Don’t be, take our free online visa assessment today
We have occupation specialists in the majority of occupation codes so rest assured, we talk your professional language and are happy to talk through your options regarding the emigrate to Australia skills list.
