Obergurgl is most visited in the Winter Months for the ski season. The village attracts skiers and snowboarders looking for family vacations, off-piste powder stashes, a snow-sure vacation and catered ski chalets. Though the area is Absolutely Stunning during the winter months while covered in snow, unfortunately many fail to see how beautiful Obergurgl is after the snow has melted. With an abundance of outdoor activities, vibrant flora and fauna and the peace and tranquillity found in the Alps, Obergurgl’s nature should be explored during the summer months!
Aside from the beautiful hiking and climbing trails, cycling and horseback riding, there are a few attractions that simply can’t be missed. Read on for our recommendations on some of the best “urkraft umhausen,” which is a term for a number of adventurous family outings in close touch with nature.
Stuiben Falls is Tirol’s biggest waterfall with a total falling height of 159 meters. The history of the waterfall dates back some 9800 years ago when the glacier fields of the Ice Age moved back, leaving behind a precarious mountain valley. As the permafrost thawed, two thirds of the mountains and peaks came crashing down into the valley. The Taufberg area was then formed by barricading the mountain brook coming down from the Horlachtal valley. Eventually, the water found a new way out, forming Stuiben Falls. This is a must-see if you are visiting the Obergurgl area and make sure you bring your camera!
This scenic Lake is a big attraction for hikers and swimmers because of its natural beauty and warm temperatures that reach 24 degrees during the summer. The lake was formed by way of a natural catastrophe in the last ice age when impounded water was caused by a rock slide. Because of its location amidst crystal rock, the lake has very soft water that is fresh and lovely for swimming. Once again, the views surrounding the lake are absolutely stunning so this is an outing that shouldn’t be missed!
Otztal Birds of Prey Park
Next to the Otzi Village, the Otztal Birds of Prey Park is a lovely place where you can watch vultures, kites, buzzards, falcons, owls and eagles in their natural habitat. The park hosts 30 animals and over 15 species of predatory birds covering an area of 5000 square meters. There are also flight demonstrations that take place in a special arena which offers a wonderful show for all ages.
The Birds of Prey Park is also in close proximity to the Otzi Village and Umhausen Swimming Lake, which are also great outings for the family.
We hope you and your family enjoy these recommendations for Obergurgl’s top nature attractions brought to you by the Chalet at 11˚ East.
