As we all anxiously wait for the ski season to begin next month (Obergurgl opens 16 November) there is no doubt that the savviest skiers are busy googling the snow reports and double checking the weather reports already. The anticipation of the season looms and we all want to know if the 2017/18 ski season in Obergurgl will be a great one!
The Weather
While it is impossible to predict what lies ahead for the snowy peaks of Obergurgl-Hochgurgl, perhaps the best predictor of future weather is the past. Obergurgl-Hochgurgl, often described as “snow sure” is indeed a sure thing based on its past snow record. With a lift system that extends up to 3080m, Obergurgl-Hochgurgl is Austria’s highest parish, making is a reliable choice for early season skiers. For the past 5 consecutive seasons, Obergurgl has seen at least one major snowfall no later than the 11th of November; however, this usually occurs much earlier, in October. The average annual precipitation is 851mm and the temperature decreases by around 0.6°C per 100 vertical meters of elevation so precipitation and snow levels increase significantly the further up you go. Altitude is key with Obergurgl-Hochgurgl and if you’re looking for early-season snow, your best bet is to head high up into the mountain!
Ski Passes
For those who are visiting Obergurgl for a Luxury Ski holiday, your best bet is the multi-resort pass for 3+ days. With this pass Ötztal’s ski areas of Obergurgl, Hochgurgl and Soelden give you access to 254 slope kilometres, 55 mountain lifts, with just one ticket! Ski passes from 3+ days are available only as combined tickets in the coming winter season while 1-day or 2-day lift tickets are still valid only in one ski area of your choice. This incredible pass offers a new dimension in skiing that can keep up also with other big, national ski pass alliances as a serious competitor.
