American architect Beau Welling has designed the new North Course at Quinta do Lago in collaboration with Irish golfer Paul McGinley.

The North Course is the latest major design project the Irish golfer has been involved with. Other recent developments at the Quinta do Lago resort have included the Paul Mcginley Golf Academy (opened in 2011) and the new state-of-the-art TaylorMade Fitting centre, designed to give golfers access to the latest equipment and technology used by tour professionals.

A new look for the North Course

The North Course re-development has been one of the most talked about development projects in Europe this year. The new course has been built to the highest specifications as part of a twenty nine million euro investment programme that was launched in Quinta do Lago back in 2009. A further twenty one million euros will be spent on the facilities over the next three years, with plans for it to be the number one course at the prestigious family resort in Portugal.

American Architect Beau Welling led the re-development, bringing on Paul McGinley as a signature designer. Rather than focusing on extending the course, they were keen to focus on precision and strategy, creating a golfing experience where accuracy and course management were the key factors. They also wanted to create a course that provided a fun and enjoyable golfing experience for golfers of all abilities.

Since closing last December, the par-72, 6,776 yard golf course has undergone a number of changes, with all new greens, tees, bunkers, irrigation, drainage systems and cart paths. The North Course now has four sets of tees on each hole, allowing it to accommodate for players of all levels.

A whopping 379,800 tonnes of earth has been moved and an extra 93.5km of new piping has been implemented. Low-cut Bermuda grass has also been introduced around the greens to create a number of recovery shot options, allowing for increased satisfaction on all levels of play.

Going green

The renovation on the course has enabled Quinta do Lago to reduce its impact on the environment and therefore allowed them to run a ‘greener’ golf course. Recycled water and solar energy are now used to maintain the course.

The new course was also purposely designed to feature less grassed areas, lessening the impact on the environment. A number of animal and plant habitats have also been incorporated into the design.

The grand opening of the North Course

Paul McGinley will be officially opening the re-developed North Course at Portugal’s prestigious Quinta do Lago resort on 7th October, just a week after leading the European team in the Ryder cup. The golfer claims that the new design will test golfers of all abilities and believes the North Course is a great addition to Europe’s leading family destination.

Just a month after the grand opening, Quinta do Lago will play host to the World Golf Awards. Those attending the ceremony will have chance to play on the newly renovated course, with the World Golf Classic Golf Competition being held on the same day.
